Prime Sheep - 31.07.24
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,864 prime sheep, comprising of 1,926 spring lambs & 2,938 cast ewes & rams.
A larger offering of 1926 prime lambs were forward with a far stronger trade than previous weeks. A whole sale average of 321ppk was achieved or 325sqq or £142.35 per head. Topping today’s sale at 405ppk came for 2 lovely Beltex lambs at 42kg achieving £170 from Messrs Gribbon, Waterside with the same home selling others at 402ppk. M/s Gribbon’s run of 42 lambs sold to average 353ppk for 42 averaging £150.
Top price per head of £200 came for a single Dutch Spotted weighing 74kg from Grange Walls. First time consigner at Penrith, David Allen from Dalston sold his run of 34 meaty lambs to average 45kg realising £157.50 per head.
Suffolk lambs sold to £184 for 57kg from M/s Wilson, South View. Once again heavy sheep prove to bring in the greatest returns with numerous sheep £160 or over. Another couple quality assignments from Wednesday’s sale were from regular supporters Gillian Clubbs, Old Walls selling a run of 12 Texel’s to average 48kg at 350ppk or £168.50. and secondly from Jackie Marshall, The Hermitage selling 15 Continental’s at 46kg or 344ppk to £159.60.

Very possibly the dearest trade seen for Cast Ewes with a sale average of £133.10 being achieved. Don’t be fooled by a few fancy prices, there is a weekly solid trade for all our customers, reaping the benefits of 16 active buyers.
225 ewes and rams achieved a value over £200 ahead. Topping at £290 from weekly stalwart customers Messrs M McNally, Northern Ireland with a pen of 3 Pure Texels and secondly from Mr R Brough, The Croft, Cockermouth with 3 Pure Texel’s selling to PAK Mecca Meats, Birmingham.
Heavy ewes sold with the greatest of ease constantly £200 ahead plus with Suffolk X Texel’s achieving £260 from Mr A Straney, Glenroyd Road with numerous pens £200 plus and all sold averaging £167.49. Mule ewes topped at £182 for a pen of scotch bred ewes from Tarn Side selling to JB Foods, Bradford and English Mules also to £182 from Messrs W & R Lawson, Stubsgill with plenty £160 plus.
Swaledales topped at £117 from Messrs W Ridley, Woodhall with a pen of 10 selling to Mr J Khan.
Cast rams topped at £245 from Mr C Abernethy, Aberdeen with his prize Texel stock ram with others comfortably £200 ahead plus.
An excellent entry of 38 North Country Cheviot hoggs from Messrs Gillespie, Quarry Gill, Wigton topping at £142 for 20 and the following 18, at £130.
It’s the time to sell and make most of the trade when its realising, it would be crazy to sell anywhere else with the solid honest returns witnessed at Penrith. With several new and returning vendors giving us a go today. Going home with £20 more than they sold earlier in the week or expected!
