On Wednesday 30th September, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 4,759 cast ewes and rams.
Record numbers of cast ewes and rams were forward, with vendors queuing out of the gate to take advantage of a packed ringside of 12–15 active buyers. This ensured strong competition across all categories, including numerous grazing orders for both hill and lowland breeds.
A record average of £330.18 was achieved by Messrs N & C Bainbridge, Lane Side, with 11 pure-bred Texel ewes. A pen of three topped at £380, selling to Mr K Harryman, while a pair followed closely at £365.
Mr B Duffton, Bogie Street, sold Suffolks to a staggering £300. A grand total of 504 averaged £188.88, with larger pens selling at £240 x 10, £238 x 14 and £218 x 17.
Rams produced some exceptional returns, with Texels from Mr S Lawson, Huntly Lodge, topping at a staggering £400 per head and a further 19 selling for more than £250 per head.
Some tremendous pens of Cheviot ewes came through the ring, topping at £215, with larger pens selling at £200 x 20 and £183 x 15. North Country Cheviots sold to £161 x 20, £160 x 15, £160 x 26 and £150 x 13.
A monster Blackie ewe topped at £170, while larger pens sold to £158 x 15, £144 x 23, £128 x 23, £128 x 15 and £127 x 32. Swaledales sold to £152 from Messrs D W Cannon, while Messrs Strong, Well House, sold 21 to £133.
The strongest Mules comfortably reached £200, with plenty selling from £180 to £190. Larger pens sold to £196 x 33, £195 x 12, £189 x 17 and £178 x 25.
All in all, demand remained consistently strong from start to finish, and all customers enjoyed a very good day’s trading.

On Wednesday 30th September, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 2,838 prime lambs and 222 lightweight hoggs and lambs, taking the total prime sheep entry to 3,060 head.
Another excellent entry of 2,891 prime lambs was forward, with meaty, well-fed sheep continuing to sell extremely well across all classes.
Lambs weighing 45kg and under were particularly sought after today, showing an improvement on the week, while those weighing 46–50kg met slightly more resistance. The day’s sale topped at 465ppk for a 40kg lamb from Mr G Cartmell, Hollands, which realised £186. The same home also sold a pen of 42kg Beltex lambs at 457ppk, realising £192.
The top price per head was £222 for 65kg Suffolk lambs from R W & G Dickinson, High Knipe.
T E Clarke, Howgill Castle, sold a pen of 10 Mule lambs weighing 54kg, which realised £168.
The prices below speak for themselves, reflecting a great day’s trading at Penrith and demonstrating that large numbers can be handled with ease.
