On Wednesday 1st April, Penrith & District Farmers Mart LLP held a bumper show of 4162 Hoggs, another fantastic day was had with an average of £185.37 per head or 393ppk or 408sqq, some fantastic runs of well-fed sheep throughout the sale credit to all vendors. Topping today’s sale at 521ppk came for a brilliant pen of 4 Beltex, weighing 43kgs achieving £224 from Messrs W & S E Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow with other numerous pens of sheep selling more than 500ppk. Top price per head of £248 came from Messrs W Murray and Son, Prior House for a pen of 3, weighing 62kgs or 400ppk. This homes run of 37 was arguably the best run of hoggs ever seen here in Penrith selling the run to average of £230.65. All sheep under 50kg would be stand on from last week’s trade with heavies showing slightly more resistance. Suffolks sold to £223 for a pen of 7, weighing 59kgs from T Armstrong and Sons, Sceugh Dyke. Messrs J W Watson, Kirkby Stephen, topping Cheviots at £214 for 63kgs. Mules sold to £208 for 68kgs from W J Whitfield, Pennine View. Herdwicks Hoggs sold to £179 for a pen of 18, weighing 45kg from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside.
