Today we held our fortnightly sale of 213 Rearing Calves and Stirks forward. A sight to behold as trade soars to another level for all classes of stock here at Penrith, many more are required fortnightly to fulfil demand. The sale topped at £1,760 for a Beef Shorthorn bull, 10-months-old from Nord Vue Farms, with this home selling another at £1,660. Bullocks topped at £1,710 for a 16-month-old Blue from Messrs A & W Johnston, White Fold, with this home also selling an Aberdeen Angus bullock to £1,520. Heifer stirks topped at £1,500 for a pair of British Blues from Messrs Robinson & Son, Skygarth. Stobart Farming, Croglin High Hall, sold a run of 14 Beef Shorthorn and Aberdeen Angus bullocks and heifers, 9 to 10-months old to average £1,047. Calves were also a ferocious trade, with stronger types in short supply. This section topped at £870 for a 5-month-old Limousin bull calf from Messrs Todhunter, Beeches Farm. British Blue calves sold to £630 for 3-months-old from Skirwith Abbey. Messrs RW & AJ Jackson, Clarks Farm, sold a run of 4 Limousin and Beef Shorthorn bulls to average £602.50, for 7-weeks-old. Messrs Threlfell, Plumpton Head, sold 3-week-old British Blue bulls to £445. Dolphenby Farm sold a pen of 5 British Blue heifers, 3-weeks-old to £365. On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,534 prime sheep, comprising of 3,464 prime hoggs & 3,071 cast ewes & rams. Trade continues to follow the national trend with handy weighted prime hoggs selling exceptionally well, heavy hoggs showing some resistance. A whole sale average of 338ppk or 361sqq, an average price per head of £156 was achieved. Topping todays sale at £260 or 510ppk, came for a Beltex hogg weighing 51kg. This hogg was owned by the Carruthers family, Towcett who kindly donated all proceeds to Motor Neurone Disease (MND), and was purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn on behalf of Shans Group ltd, a massive thanks must go to all involved. Messrs W & S E Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall sold a pair of Beltex’s weighing 41kg selling at £194 or 473ppk. The same home sold 62kg hoggs to £202. Suffolk hoggs sold to £200 for 71kg from Messrs W R & F D Siddle, Honeypot. Other Suffolks sold to 369ppk for a pen of 27 weighing 42kg achieving £155 from Messrs J Carrick & Sons, Ireshope Plains. Herdwicks sold to 376ppk for 41kg at £151 for 2 pens of 27 from Messrs Bland, Clea Hall. Messrs Iredale, Greenbank sold a pen of 17 Scotch Blackface at 354ppk for 39kg at £138. Mules sold to £171 for a pen of 20 weighing 65kg from Messrs H M & R Ivinson, Hole House. The sale of Cast ewes today achieved the highest return and average ever with most averages and expectations up £20 and the whole sale averaging £174.90. Topping at £380 for an ultimate Texel Ewe from Mr M McNally, Northern Ireland purchased by Romford Halal with a total of 26 ewes selling in excess of £300. Topping at £288 went to a pen of Pure Suffolk ewes from Tann House being purchased by M Najib & Son, Derbyshire. A total of 684 Suffolk Ewes sold to a monster average, £211.84!!!! With greater pens achieving £265 x10, £250 x22, £242 x13, £240 x10, £235 x41, £230 x27, £228 x28, £228 x16, £224 x10, £224 x21, £222 x11, £217 x39, £216 x27. Cheviot & Horned ewes enjoying a lift of £10 - £15 per head, with a top of £160 for Rough Fells and Swaledale to £146 from Messrs M Bindloss & Son, Shap Abbey, with numerous Scotch Blackface achieving £135 - £145. Cast rams topped at £300 for Suffolk x Texels from Mr A Duncan, Inshes, Inverness selling to PAK Mecca Meats. Spring Special Show & Sale of Store Cattle Monday 10th March 2025 On Monday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their March Special Show & Sale of 562 Store Cattle, kindly sponsored by PFK Rural & Katy Edgar’s Outside Catering. The early morning judging was in the capable hands of Mr Chris Anderson, Glosterhill Farm, Morpeth. A credit must go to all our vendors, it was commented on many occasions that the standard of cattle throughout the day was terrific. Resulting in the whole sale averaging £1901.12. Champion Honours went to a superb Limousin Bullock from Amy Wilson, Hardrigg Hall turned out to perfection and achieving £2920 selling to Mr D Barker, Scarborough. Topping the Heifers at £3315 went to noted local stock men the Wills Family, Fawcett Park with an excellent British Blue X Limousin Heifer 22 months old and purchased by Foley Brothers, Capheaton. This run of 12 went on to average £2610.83. A consignment of 24 mainly Limousin Heifers, 21-23 months from Messrs Wales, Thackwood went on to average £2467.50 topping at £2865 on 2 occasions selling respectively to Mr B Duffton, Aberdeen and Foley Brothers. Messrs IS & CA Mounsey, Town Head averaged £2510 for a run of 10 mainly Hereford X Cattle topping at £2765 for a 21 month old British Blue X. Dairy Bred Cattle brought in some outstanding returns with Messrs D & J Errington, Southwaite Farm selling 8 Hereford and Limousin Bullocks to average £2415 topping at £2715, and Messrs TJ & JM Powley, Blands Farm selling 14 Dairy Bred Limousins mainly Heifers to average £2239.29 plus a run of Dairy Bred Angus Bullocks and Heifers from Messrs JE & DL Hodgson Soulby Grange with a top of £2495 for a pair of bullocks and averaging £2197. Younger cattle proved some strong returns with Messrs WE & B Wilson, Undercragg selling 28 to average £1870, 10-11 months old topping at £2265 selling to Mr B Duffton. In the Bull section pure Limousins topped at £2375 from Messrs W Richardson & Son, Ghyll House and Mr KJ Burrow, Hacra sold 8 pures, 9 month old to average £2052.50 topping at £2295 with all sold averaging £1940.
