Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 1,858 prime lambs, 109 prime hoggs and 399 lightweight hoggs and lambs, bringing the total prime sheep entry to 2,366 head.
A bigger entry of spring lambs was seen locally this season, with numbers here in Penrith up by 600 on last year. Fed sheep and lambs, particularly those weighing 45kg and over, proved exceptionally good to sell. An overall average of 407ppk was achieved, or £183.18 per head. Topping today’s sale at 500ppk was a 44kg Beltex from E S & D Noble, Mill Farm, achieving £220.
The sale topped at £268 per head on two occasions, firstly for a 66kg Suffolk lamb from Messrs Graves, Hesket House, achieving 406ppk and secondly for a 68kg Suffolk from Parkside Livestock, Aberdeen. Messrs Graves, Hesket House, sold their run of 46 excellently well-fed lambs to average 51.96kg, 434.85ppk, or £225.93 per head.

J D Johnston, Castle Bank: 9 at 52kg, realising £221.56.
T Armstrong & Son, Sceugh Dyke: 7 at 51kg, realising £221.29.
D W Cannon, Low Abbey, sold Suffolks to 460ppk for a pen of seven weighing 48kg, or £221. This home’s run of 39 Suffolk Mule lambs averaged 49kg, 428ppk, or £211 per head.
