Today we held our weekly sale of 2,510 cast ewes and rams.
A very pleasant surprise was witnessed in the ewe section with all classes up £20 per head on the week, with an overall sale average of £183.41 being achieved.
The sale topped at £345 from loyal weekly supporter, Mr William Morison, South Bogbain, always turning out excellent fed stock, for a pure Texel ewe, purchased by AJ Meats, Birmingham, with a further 23 ewes selling in excess of £300. Mr G Bell, Haas Side Farm, sold a run of 31 Texel X ewes to average a mind boggling £267.45, topping at £325 on three occasions.
For the first time ever the Suffolk section has averaged over £200, selling 420 ewes to average £205.97, topping at £270 with larger pens realising £236 x14, £228 x17, £228 x12, £218 x29, £217 x17.
The best Scotch Mule ewes topped at £206 for a pen of 17 from Mr B Duffton, Huntly. Horned ewes were a long way short of buyers’ requirements, topping at £158 for a pen of 29 Scotch Blackface from South Bogbain, with Swaledales to £144 from Mr MW Bousfield, Hegdale.
Rams again sold with great ease, topping at £276 for a pair of Texels, with numerous pens £250 plus.
All classes are needed to fulfil the demand every week here at Penrith.
