On Tuesday 8th September Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Great Annual Show & Sale of 6,578 Breeding Sheep comprising of Mule Gimmer Shearlings, '2' Shear Mule Ewes, Suffolk cross & Texel Shearlings & Ewes 3 Shear & above, kindly sponsored by Peter Horn Mobile Sheep Dipping. Comfortably one of the best shows of sheep in the country, with a clearance of 99.9% achieved. Some returns were up £30, and in some cases as much as £60, ahead of other centres. The show alleys were packed with quality sheep from the Eden Valley and attracted customers from all over the United Kingdom. A grand total of 77 pens of sheep sold for more than £300, with consignments throughout the day also averaging over £300. Older ewes opened the day with the annual consignment of Mule three-shears from renowned local farmers Messrs J J & A Brough, The Clappers. This consignment averaged £266.15 and topped at £270 on two occasions. Mule two-shears went on to average an all-time high of £255.89, up £24 on the year. Champion honours went to Messrs R Brough, Langfauld, with a tremendous pen of ewes showing great power and carcass, which sold for £315 to J Y Elliott. This consignment of 50 went on to average a staggering £292.11. Annual consignors Messrs M W Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, sold a run of 180 to average an eye-watering £281.46, topping at £330 for the second-prize pen of ewes, which went to long-standing purchasers Mr A Todd, Settle. On to the Mule shearlings, with possibly one of the best shows of sheep seen here at Penrith and pen after pen of quality. Champion honours went to local Mule enthusiast Mr S Ridley with a pen of tremendously well-turned-out shearlings, which sold for £340 to Bromfield Farm, Aspatria. This consignment of 34 achieved the highs of the day, averaging £330.29, including two ultimate Scotch Mules, which sold for £460. Also achieving £340 was Mr J Acklerley, Milton Mains, with the third-prize pen of shearlings selling to regular buyers Messrs Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm. This run of 130 averaged £298.59. Leading the averages were Messrs J J & E Lawson & Sons, Hundith House, with 60 averaging £305, closely followed by 145 from Mr T A Foster, Ryehill, at £297.45. Quality continental shearlings sold to a storming trade, with the ringside still packed with buyers eager to purchase sheep. Topping the section at £660 was an outstanding pen of seven pure Texels from the Beard Family, Dormansteads, Roweltown, with a further pen of seven selling at £460, all were purchased by Mr A Metcalfe, Yarlsber. The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Emma Carvey, who awarded first place to Mr Jack Douglas, Cambeckhill. This pen later sold for the section’s second-top price of £510 for a pen of five, selling to Mr Ethan Rudd, Lazonby. Jack’s run of 19 averaged £454.75. Messrs Bindloss, Shap Abbey, received second place in the morning’s judging, and this pen later sold for £450 to Mr James Thompson. Ewes with strength and length proved easy to sell, while the more Beltex-type sheep were less favoured. K E & T W Jackson, 3 Margarets Croft, sold a pen of 10 Texels to £420, purchased by E D Ringer, Northampton. Mr J E Gardett, 2 Wayside Cottage, sold Blue Texels to £310, purchased by Mr Neil Millbourn, Walby Grange. Suffolk X shearlings topped at £295 for a pen of eight from the Bindloss Family, purchased by W J & V J Case, Ulverston. Numerous pens of quality sheep still sold for more than £400, resulting in a continental shearling average of £270.50, up £30 on last year. Full report on our website.
