On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,658 Prime Hoggs.
Seeing is believing here in Penrith. 3658 hoggs descended with a trade unseen for some years. A wholesale average of £177 up £15 on the week, an SQQ average of 416ppk or 382 ppk overall with another mass of heavy sheep in excess of 50kg.
Topping the day’s trading at 513ppk came for a pen of 7 cracking lambs at 42kg achieving £223 consigned from M/s E J Ivinson & Son, Skelling Farm.
34 lambs sold in excess of 500ppk today. Topping pounds per head at £227 came from M/s T A & A Jefferson, Aspatria Hall for a superb pen of 7 at 47kg or 483ppk.
A total of 371 sheep sold for more than £200 in today’s sale. M/s F Savage & Son, Petteril Green topped consignment averages of £206.75 for their run of 36 and 2 other runs averaging over £200.
M/s T A & A Jefferson, Aspatria Hall sold a run of 40 at £202.70. M/s Ritson, Ireby Hall sold his run of 24 to average £200.17.
Suffolks sold to 420ppk for a pen of 44kg achieving £185 from M/s T A & A Dickinson, North Netherscales, with a pen full of 16 Suffolks weighing 59kg selling to £200 from M/s Graham, Hallrigg.
Mule hoggs prove to be in hot demand. Topping at £190 for a pen of 20 weighing 55kg from M/s Lowis, Waterside. W & SE Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall brought their first run of Blackface hoggs selling a pen of 10 at 52kg to £184.
Lightweight hoggs prove exceptionally good to market for all classes. More sheep are needed to fulfil demand with our large ringside of buyers.

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,351 Cast Ewes & Rams.
Comfortably the dearest trade seen yet with a grade total of 3351 Cast Ewes & Rams averaging £176. Topping at £365 from Donaghanie Road, Northen Ireland selling at AJ Meats.
Weekly consignor Mr W Morison, South Bogbain, Aberdeen achieved £362 with a pure Texel selling to Romford Halal and a further 255 selling over £300, that included 6 at £350 and 8 at £308.
A further 899 sold over £200 ahead with 611 Suffolks selling to average £197.89, topping at £260 for a pen of pures from Mr B Duffton, Huntley with larger pens achieving £238 x 18, £234 x 18, £230 x 24, £216 X 18, £209 x 22, £208 x 14, £205 x 22, £198 x 17, £196 x 26, £196 x 20, £195 x 20, £194 x 20.
A real shortage of weight in the Mules but nevertheless 19 Scotch Mule achieved £195.
Horned Ewes hit an all time high, a pen of 31 Northumberland Blackface achieving £155 from Hall Farm. The best Swale Ewes £120 plus topping at £137 from M/s Raine, Old Parks with a pen of 11 selling to Mr M Bowe.
Cast Rams topped at £266 from Mr W Morison, South Bogbain with 6 huge Texels selling to Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham, a very large quantity £200 ahead plus.
More numbers are needed on a weekly basis to satisfy this ring side of 14 active buyers.
