On Friday, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its fortnightly sale of 267 calves and stirks.
A fantastic entry of 267 calves and stirks came forward, with another blistering trade witnessed throughout. The 126 bull calves sold to average £605.71, while 77 heifers averaged £606.
Calves topped at a staggering £1,280 for an outstanding Charolais bull calf from M/s Sowerby, Townhead Farm, purchased by Mr B Ridsdale, Yew Tree. Heifers from the same home topping with a Charolais realising £1,080, also purchased by Mr Ridsdale.
Messrs Sowerby also sold eight-week-old milk calves to an amazing £920, to average £950.
British Blues topped at £1,000 for a four-month-old Blue bull from M/s JH & JE Taylor, The Harras, selling to Richard Grainger. In total, 16 calves sold in excess of £900. Black and White cattle of all classes met an excellent trade, with M/s JN & FC Walker, Harrington Park Farms, selling Friesians to £190.
Stirks and calves, were short of requirements today, with more needed to satisfy demand. Topping the section at £1,550 was a pair of seven-month-old Limousin bulls from M/s JH Capstick, Lockholme Hall. An outstanding run of Friesian bullocks from M/s R Forrest & Son, Low Rutter, aged three to eight months, sold to average £851 and topped at £1,070 for a pen of five.
