Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 1,954 prime lambs and 686 lightweight hoggs and lambs, bringing the total prime sheep entry to 2,640 head.
An increased entry of 1,954 lambs went through the ring this afternoon, with fed, meaty sheep short of supply. A larger number of lighter lambs reflected the dry weather we have had recently. However, a whole-sale average of 370ppk overall, or 371sqq, and £170 per head was achieved, up £22 on the corresponding week last year. Numerous sheep still broke the £200 barrier.
Topping the day’s trading at 450ppk were 40kg Beltex lambs, reaching £180 from Messrs Metcalfe, Home Farm, with W Gribbon & Co, Waterside, following closely at 444ppk for three lambs weighing 43kg and achieving £191.
The top price of the day, £246, was achieved for a brilliant Texel x lamb from Messrs R Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge, weighing 61kg realising 403ppk.
Suffolk lambs from H M Livestock sold to £234 for three weighing 59kg at 379ppk.

Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 3,280 cast ewes and rams on Wednesday.
Huge numbers graced the ringside once again, with plenty of competition from buyers sourcing stock to supply abattoirs and wholesalers throughout England. Topping the sale was Mr W Morison, South Bogbain, with excellent fed pure Texels purchased by Romford Halal.
If you have Suffolks, we want them, as demand was very strong once again, achieving premium prices over our competitors. Topping at £270 were Messrs A & H Stevenson, Armoy, with superb Suffolk X Texels, while Mr M McNally sold seven similarly bred ewes to £262. With 501 sold to average £185.90.
A tremendous pen of Cheviot ewes from Mr H McRae, Shethin Farm, achieved £218, with the next draw selling to £196.
The commoner fat ewes met a respectable trade, as expected. English Mules with weight were still £180–£190, topping at £192 from Messrs R J & R J Benson, Kettleside, while a pen of 10 Easy Care ewes from Messrs Atkinson, Scratchmere Scarr, achieved £182.
There was strong demand for horned ewes, with Swales topping at £154 from Messrs W Ridley, Woodhall. Messrs E J & R J Wear, Howe Green, sold a run of 70 Swales to average £130.04, topping at £149 for a pen of 15.
A ringside of 14 active buyers could not be beaten, so take full advantage of the orders and competition available.
