On Wednesday 10th June, Penrith & District Farmers Mart held its weekly sale, with 583 spring lambs, 1,043 prime hoggs, 649 lightweight lambs and 3,613 cast ewes, the sale equated to 5,888 head. A smaller show was forward following a more challenging week of weather. Lambs with weight continued to excel, with those 46kg and above achieving the strongest returns. An overall sale average of 445ppk was achieved, or £194.21 per head. Topping today’s sale at 514ppk were three excellent Texel lambs from Mr R A Crichton, Rottington Hall, weighing 42kg and realising £216. Messrs Metcalfe, Home Farm, followed closely at 511ppk for three lambs weighing 37kg and realising £189. Topping per head at £254 were Suffolk lambs from R J & R J Benson, Kettleside Farm, weighing 54kg and realising 470ppk. Also breaking the £250 barrier was a pair of Texels from Mr M Strong, Hewer Hill, weighing 53kg and achieving 474ppk, or £251. This consignment also topped the averages at £242 for four. Top consignor averages per head were as follows: • 4 @ £242 - M Strong, Hewer Hill • 10 @ £234.60 - A McCutchen, Bodney Road • 9 @ £234.44 - R J & R J Benson, Kettleside • 22 @ £231.05 - M/s T E Irving & Son, East Cliff Messrs Metcalfe, Home Farm, sold 21 outstanding lambs to average 489.26ppk at 38kg, achieving £188.71 per head. A strong entry of 1,043 prime hoggs was forward, with heavy hoggs continuing to meet strong demand, while handy-weight hoggs showed greater resistance. Topping the day’s trading at £258 was a superb pen of four Texel hoggs, weighing 64kg, from Mr T Hetherington, Staffield Old Hall. The same home also sold three Suffolk hoggs, weighing 75kg, at £252. P Baker sold an excellent pen of six Jacob hoggs, weighing 61kg, to achieve £238. The top ppk of 455ppk came for a pen of nine Texels from Blackfold, weighing 55kg and achieving £250. J Bowling & Son Ltd, Crompton Farm, sold Beltex hoggs to 453ppk for one weighing 49kg and achieving £222. On Wednesday, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 3,611 cast ewes and rams. Huge numbers were forward again with an overall sale average of £166.28 being achieved. Quality remained very good to sell topping at £350 from Mr D Coulter, Northern Ireland with superb pure bred Texel ewes. M/s DJ Wilson, Jubilee farm, North Yorkshire sold 18 pure bred Texels to average £285 topping at £295 for 16 sold. The heavier fat ewes definitely cheaper this time but nevertheless the stronger ewes still £200 plus. Horned ewes proved still one of the easiest commodities to sell with M/s Lightfoot, Gill Side selling Swaledale’s to £148 for a pen of 15. Several pens of Scotch Blackface still £140 plus. Cast Rams still very dear topping at £282 a pen of 11 Texel x from M Mcnally selling to Mr K Harryman and many other pens at £200 ahead plus.
