On Wednesday 3rd June, Penrith & District Farmers Mart held their weekly sale with 1,079 spring lambs, 1,831 prime hoggs and 835 lightweight lambs and hoggs sold, giving a total of 3,745 prime sheep through the ring. A tremendous entry of 1,079 spring lambs was met with another outstanding trade, returning a wholesale average of 475ppk, or £207 per head. Topping the day’s sale at 543ppk was a cracking pair of 42kg Texel lambs from Jackie Marshall, Hermitage, selling to £228. Weight was very much the order of the day, with anything 46kg and above in especially strong demand. The top price per head was £270 for a 52kg Texel lamb from Mr A J Bell, Thethwaite, achieving 519ppk. In total, eight lots sold in excess of £250. Mr A J Bell also topped the Suffolk section at £258 for 53kg. Mr R A Crichton, Rottington Hall, sold a pen of five 45kg Suffolk lambs to 507ppk, or £228, while Mr L W Taylor Ltd, Hill Top, sold 50kg Mules to £220. On Wednesday, Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,476 cast ewes and rams. Numbers were back to a strong level, with the trade to match, as 3,476 head sold to an average of £186.74. Leading the sale at £370 was a pure Texel from Mr J Linsley, Cottage Farm, purchased by AJ Meats, Birmingham. In total, 34 sheep sold in excess of £300. Mr M McNally, Jonesborough, sold a pen of 12 to £330, while M/s AJ & LM Haston sold 6 to average £355. Suffolks continue to be a pleasure to sell, with Suffolk x Texel ewes reaching £315 from M/s J Wilson & Sons, South Field. A total of 643 sold to average a record £208.17, with larger pens also selling strongly at £265 for 12, £230 for 17, £228 for 14, £223 for 20, and £217 for 17. Mule ewes topped at a tremendous £228 from Mr CB Abernethy, Belvedene. The best Scotch Mules from Mr B Duffton reached £220, with further pens from the same home selling 24 to £208 and 16 to £193. Horned ewes met an exceptional trade, with Mr W Morison, South Bogbain, selling 17 to £166 and a further pen of 33 to £157. Mr AJ Bell, Thethwaite, sold a full ring of 33 to £158. Cast rams sold with great ease, topping at £310 for a pure Texel from Mr CB Abernethy, Belvedene, purchased by A & D Meats. Numerous other tups sold between £270 and £300.
