Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held its weekly sale of 3,288 cast ewes and rams on Wednesday. As we move into mid-July, numbers are up by more than 1,000 head on the year, with averages up over £20 ahead. A ringside of 14 active buyers ensured strong, honest competition, driving premium returns for all vendors. The whole sale averaged £174.67, with most classes simply £5- £8 ahead up on the week. The top price of £370 went to regular customer Mr W Morison, South Bogbain for tremendous pure-bred Texels and numerous others selling at £300 and above. M/s B S & J Strong & Son, Hewer Hill sold a consignment of pure-bred Texels to average £301.66, topping at £325 for a pair selling to Shan’s UK Ltd. A total of 726 Suffolk-bred ewes were forward, averaging an excellent £191.33 and topping at £270 on two occasions. Larger pens sold to strong demand, including 19 at £220, 14 at £218, 12 at £212, 23 at £211, and two pens of 21 and 11 at £208. M/s TJ & JM Powley, Bland Farm, sold a run of 48 North of England Mule ewes to average £184.50, topping at £194. Horned ewes remained well short of buyer requirements, with Swaledales selling to £155 from M/s S & W Maughan, Street House. Scotch Blackface sold to £162 from Mr B Dufton, while South Bogbain again sold a pen of 20 well-fed hill Blackface ewes to £150. Cast rams were very easily sold, with returning customer Mr H McRae, Aberdeen, achieving £360 for pure Texels and Mr C Abernethy selling a pair to £270.
