Prime Sheep 240724
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,024 prime sheep, comprising of 1,533 spring lambs & 2,491 cast ewes & rams.
The prime lamb trade followed on from last week, with a whole sale average of 315p/kg (£140/head) being achieved.
Topping today’s sale at £180 was a pen of 60kg Suffolk lambs from Glenroyd Farm, selling to Mr J Linsley. Suffolk lambs in the sale peaked at 361k/kg (£166) from the same home.
Topping today’s sale at 400p/kg (£160) was a fantastic Beltex lamb, weighing 40kg from Messrs Crozier & Langcake, High Moss, selling to Mr J Blenkhorn on behalf of Shan’s Group.
Messrs Pollock, Braithwaite Mill, sold a run of Continental bred lambs to average 358p/kg (£163/head) for 45.5kg.
An early show of Mule lambs was forward from Messrs W Ridley, Woodhall, with a pen of 43kg lambs achieving £127 (295p/kg).
An extended ringside of buyers was forward around the cast ewe ring ensuring a very healthy average of £126.72 being achieved. Topping at £290 per head on two occasions, firstly for a pair of Texel ewes from a weekly customer Mr W Morrison, South Bogbain, Aberdeen, secondly again with a pair of Texel ewes from the same area Mr H McCrae, Shethin Farm, selling to Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham.
Throughout the sale most classes would be considerably dearer on the week with numbers short of buyer’s requirements. Heavy ewes consistently £200 per head plus, with Suffolks reaching £260 from Mr A Straney, Northern Ireland. Mules topped at £160 from Mr T Magney, Gallowreay.
A monster of a Charollais ram from Mr M McNally, Jonesborough, realised £340 purchased by Shan’s Group.
Horned ewes with flesh and weight comfortably realising over £100 per head. Scotch Blackfaced achieving £117 from Backmuir Livestock, with a pen of 18. Swaledales realised £113 from Messrs W Ridley, Woodhall purchased by Mr A Dawson.
