Prime Sheep - 17.07.24
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,816 prime sheep, comprising of 1,660 spring lambs, 187 prime hoggs & 2,964 cast ewes & rams.
A larger offering forward of 1,660 prime lambs with heavier sheep 45kg plus, continuing to fly with 50kg plus dearer on the week. Handier weights showing slightly more resistance.
A whole sale average of 318ppk achieved or £134.50 per head. Topping today’s sale at 405ppk or £170 for 42kg Continental Lambs from Lyle Farming Company, Staingills. Top price per head of £194 came for 3 Suffolk lambs, 61kg from Grange Walls.
Suffolk lambs also sold to 352ppk for 50kg realised £176 from Messrs W Hird, Town Head.
Messrs W H Brass, Low Row sold a pen of 41kg Beltex Lambs realising £163.
Mule lambs peaked at 295ppk for 42kg, £127 from Messrs K Hunt, Braithwaite Shields.
Astonishing but still nearly 3000 ewes forward, travelling from Devon, Northern Ireland, Malton, Anglesey, Aberdeenshire and Suffolk. All taking advantage of 14 active buyers generating a weekly competitive price for all classes.
Nethertheless local Texel breeder Mr C W Donald, Lamonby topped at £270 for 4 Pure Texels selling to Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham. Mr A J Bell, Thethwaite also achieved £270 alone with Holme House.
The strongest Suffolks still steam rolled past £200 ahead topping at £225 from Glenroyd Road selling to JB Foods, Bradford.
Weight continued to be the fastest commodity to sell with no reduction in value with Messrs N C Marston, Millstone Moore selling Bluefaced Leicesters to £244 purchased by Mr A Dawson.
Cast Rams met the dearest trade witnessed with Bluefaced Leicesters to £240 and Texel x Beltex rams to £236 from Messrs Bennison, Leigh Croft selling to Field Fresh, Bradford.
Horned Ewes carrying flesh throughout the sale sold exceptionally well topping at £124 from Messrs Brown, Deepdale Hall. Leaner plainer lightweight ewes are now starting to show some resistance.
