Prime Sheep 100724
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,916 prime sheep, comprising of 1,135 spring lambs, 342 prime hoggs & 3,439 cast ewes & rams.
Those who braved the weather on Tuesday to sort and prepare lambs in the torrential rain reaped the rewards with an SQQ average of 338ppk being achieved or an average of £147 per head, midweek continues to lift the trade of prime lambs.
The sale topped at 405ppk for a pair of 40kg Beltex lambs from Messrs JE Bellas & Son, Croft Ends Farm, realising £162. A top price per head of £180 was achieved for a 50kg Dutch Spotted lamb from Mrs D Bezuidenhout, Marton Gill.
Suffolk lambs topped at 349ppk for a pen of 3, weighing 45kg from Messrs TF & GL Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm. Mr RA Crichton, Rottington Hall, sold a lovely run of 56 lambs to average £150/350ppk for 42.5kg, this up 25ppk/£10 per head on the week. Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, sold 16 lambs to average 382ppk.
Many more lambs could be sold here in Penrith and are needed on a weekly basis to fulfil demand.
A total of 342 hoggs were forward to a ring of buyers looking for meat and willing to pay a premium price for the right goods, Mr WJ Messenger, Howes Farm, sold 62kg Mule hoggs to £150 and 48kg Texel X hoggs from Greenacres achieved £130.
Once again cast ewes came forward in huge volumes but comfortably sold with ease to a very busy ringside of 13 active buyers. An overall sale average of £138 was achieved, still being one of the leading averages so far this week. The sale topped at £305 for a pen of 3 pure Texel ewes from Mr CB Abernethy, Belvedene, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham. Numerous pens throughout the sale making £200 per head plus, with Suffolk ewes topping at £235 from Mr A Straney, Glenroyd Road, also purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.
Fat ewes sold easily with a pen of 4 Bluefaced Leicesters achieving £220 from Messrs G & HR Shields, Tarn House, purchased by Mr A Dawson. Mule ewes topped at £184 for a pen of 7 from Messrs J Wilson & Son, South Field.
Horned ewes were regularly £100 per head plus, topping at £126 for a pen of 20 Scotch Blackfaced ewes from Tarn End.
All the best cast rams were comfortably in excess of £200 per head, topping at £230 for a pure Texel from Mr JD Johnson, Castle Bank, purchased by Mr Ditta, Accrington.
After all said and done the trade matched lats week for most classes with the heavier, thicker ewes just a fraction easier but still creeping towards £195-£200. The power of the live ring once again created a level, fair and very competitive price for all our vendors.
