Prime Sheep 030724
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,139 prime sheep, comprising of 1,261 spring lambs, 615 prime hoggs & 3,263 cast ewes & rams.
An overall sale average of 320ppk was achieved, considerably dearer than other competitors this week. The sale topped at 395ppk for a pen of Texel X Beltex lambs, weighing 41kg from Messrs Lyle, Staingills, realising £162 purchased by Mr A Dawson, on behalf of Vivers Scotlamb.
Weight sold exceptionally well, regularly achieving 310-320ppk. Topping at 335ppk for 54kg Suffolk X Texel lambs from Mr M Mackay, Ousby, realising £181. Suffolk X Mule lambs, weighing 57kg also achieved £181 from Mr WH Brass, Low Row, purchased by Mr A Dawson.
All throughout the sale returns brought in surprising results considering the previous days trading.
Numbers still came forward in the hogg section with meat still achieving 250-260ppk. Topping at £175 for 67kg Texel hoggs from Greenacres Farm. Handier weights topped at £114/285ppk for a pen of 30 Cheviots, weighing 40kg from the same home.
Cast ewes and rams were forward in greater numbers with returns blowing vendors minds and expectations by considerable amounts. A sale average of £147.48 was achieved, giving nowhere else a trade like this in the country, with most local markets limping behind.
A total of 307 cast ewes sold in excess of £200, just shy of 10% of the sale. Topping at £310 on two occasions, firstly from Greenacres Farm, and secondly from Tarn End, with Texel ewes selling to AJ Meats, Brimingham and Yorkshire Halal.
Heavy, fat ewes were regularly £200 plus, with Suffolks topping at £230 from RF Staveley, Suffolk, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats. Mr A Straney, Glenroyd, Northern Ireland, sold many large pens of ewes achieving £216 x 13, £210 x 12, £210 x 17, £198 x 19, £198 x 12, £197 x 20.
A total of 566 Mule ewe were forward to average £133.92, topping at £178, with large pens achieving £160 x 11, £160 x 14, £160 x 21, £158 x 21, £154 x 25, £152 x 26.
Texdale ewes topped at £200! Yes, Texel X Swaledale ewes sold to £200, from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe. Horned ewes were well in front of where we’ve seen them since the peak four-weeks-ago with Mr AR Edmondson, Hawkswell Farm, selling 70 Swaledale and Herdwick ewes to average £92.77, topping at £126 for a pen of 12 purchased by Pickstock Foods.
Cast rams sold with the greatest of ease, with numerous pens £200 per head plus. Topping at £280 from weekly customers, Greenacres Farm, with this home selling several more over £200.
