Prime Sheep - 26.06.24
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4750 prime sheep, comprising of 1463 spring lambs, 731 prime hoggs & 2,556 cast ewes & rams.
A growing number of 1463 prime sheep were forward. Trade and demand was much stronger, than expected. A whole sale average of 342ppk/£148 was achieved.
Top pence per kilo of 403ppk for 3 Texel Lambs, weighing 39kg realising £157, from Messrs Crichton, Rottington Hall, the same home realised 402ppk for 2 Suffolk Lambs, weighing 42kg realising £169.
Top price per head of £230 for a single Continental lamb, weighing 65kg from Grange Walls. Also breaking the £200 barrier was Messrs Robson, Newstead Grange for 1 Texel Lamb, weighing 60kg. Suffolk lambs sold to 390ppk for 2, weighing 42kg, also selling at £164 from Messrs Crichton.
Mule lambs sell to 303ppk for a pen of 8, weighing 39kg achieving £118 from Mrs Baker, Glebe Farm.

Top ppk of 403ppk came for 3 weighing 39kg realising £157. With this home realising 402ppk for 2 weighing 42kg realising £169 from Messrs Crichton, Rottington Hall.
Top price per head of £230 came for a single lamb weighing 65kg from Grange Walls. Also breaking the £200 barrier was T A Robson & Son, Newstead Grange for 1 Texel at 60kg. Suffolk Lambs sold to 390ppk for 2 at 42kg selling for £164 from Messrs Crichton.

An excellent entry of Prime Hoggs for the end of June of 731 in total achieving an average of 300ppk with meat continuously 300ppk topping at 329ppk for a pen of 31 Scotch Blackface weighing 45kg, totalling £148 from Gate House Farm selling to A & D Meats, Burnley. With the consignment of 160 averaging £148.71 / 317ppk for 46.5kg’s.
A run of 125 Cheviot and Scotch Blackface Hoggs weighing 41kg’s also a achieved an average of £125.30 / 304ppk.
Once again, a boom in the ring at Penrith with 2556 Cast Ewes & Rams sold to average £144. With most classes £5 up on the week. Topping at £290 from returning customer Messrs N & A Bainbridge, Lane Side, Barnard Castle with 2 superb Texel Ewes selling to A J Meats, Birmingham.
Local breeder Messrs Graham, Hallrigg sold a pair of Texel Ewes to £285 and a pen of Cast Rams to £245 selling to PAK Mecca Meats.
All heavy end ewes still comfortably £200 ahead plus with Suffolks achieving £218, Mules topped at £168 from Messrs T Armstrong & Son, Sceugh Dyke. Followed by 27 from Allowie Farm, Ayrshire selling to Mr A Dawson.
Messrs A R Edmondson, Hawkswell, Ulverston sold 2 Bluefaced Leicesters to a staggering £230 and Swaledales to £120 all purchased by Mr A Dawson.
