Prime Sheep 190624

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,715 prime sheep, comprising of 878 spring lambs, 344 prime hoggs & 1,493 cast ewes & rams.

A total of 878 lambs were forward, with more commercial type lambs in the sale seeing a whole sale average of 391p/kg or £167 per head. The sale topped at 436p/kg on two occasions, firstly for a pen of 3 Texel lambs, weighing 44kg from Messrs JM & J Fisher, & Daughters, Holme Wrangle, realising £192 and secondly for a 39kg Texel lamb, achieving £170 from Mr DJ Holdsworth, Merryvale.

A top price per head of £226 was achieved for a 64kg Charollais lamb from Mr CB Abernethy, Belvedene, with 59kg Texel lambs achieving £220 from Holme House. Suffolk lambs topped at 424p/kg for 49kg from Grange Walls, realising £208.

Once again, all classes of well-fleshed lambs sold in excess of 400p/kg with Messrs Metcalfe, Home Farm, selling a consignment of 31 lovely lambs to average 412ppk/£171 for 41kg.

Heavy lambs, over 48kg are showing strong interest with more numbers required to fulfil buyers’ demand.

Prime hoggs once again proved effortless to sell, with meat still easily achieving 300p/kg plus, topping at 366p/kg (£161) for a pen of 44kg Cheviot hoggs from Messrs T Armstrong & Son, Sceugh Dyke.
Messrs J Armstrong, Highrigg, topped at £209 for a pen of 59kg Texel cross Mules, and again realised £201 for a pen of nineteen 62kg for the same types, all selling to Mr A Dawson.
For the next few weeks all of the prime hoggs will be sold at the conclusion of the cast ewes and rams.
A smaller entry of cast ewes and rams was forward, but nevertheless the trade matched previous weeks. A great sale average of £146.55 was achieved for all sold, topping at £318 for a Texel ewe from Messrs A & R Straney, Glenroyd Road, selling to Mr J Linsley on behalf of AJ Meats, Birmingham. All Texel ewes in the sale sold to average £188.15.
Plenty of pens of Texel crosses and Suffolk crosses sold in the region of £180-£195. Mule ewes topped at £170 from Backmuir Livestock, with strong Mules regularly selling for £150-£160.
Horned ewes would see reduced returns but still sold comfortably over £100 for the better end.
Cast rams were still realising £180-£200, topping at £225 for a Texel from Green Farm.
