Prime Sheep - 12.06.24
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,368 prime sheep, comprising 794 spring lambs, 1,017 prime hoggs & 2,557 cast ewes & rams.
Leading in front with a buoyant trade and over 10 ppk more than other local centres earlier in the week with a SQQ average of 423ppk. Making the jump to Penrith was Messrs W L Musgrave & Sons, Cardew Hall taking advantage of a busy ringside of 16 active buyers throughout the sale. Topping at 502ppk with a pen of 43kg’s totalling £216 selling to Mr M Bowe on behalf of Worsley Wholesale Butchers Ltd with this consignment of 64 averaging 453ppk / £192.16.
Quality from regular consigner Messrs W Gribbon, Waterside averaged a staggering £194.07/466ppk topping at 498ppk for 40kg / £199 selling to Vivers Scotlamb. Topping at £228 went to Messrs Lightfoot, selling 55kg’s continental lambs and Messrs Wilson, South Field selling 135 Suffolk x lambs to average £182 topping at £216 for 54kg’s.
A poorer show of Hoggs were forwarded meated Hoggs sold very well with £221 being achieved from Messrs J Armstrong, Highrigg with 63kg’s selling to Mr A Dawson with the run averaging £198.55.
Hogg’s with meat still comfortably 360-375ppk.
Despite the negative trade and talk in the Ewe section earlier in the week. Demand and trade here held and matched previous weeks trading here. An overall average of £142.02. Topping at £285 went to Mr A Straney, Glenroyd Road with a pair of Texels selling to Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham. Quality still selling in excess of £200.
All the heavy fat ewes £200 head plus and Mules topped at £168 from Mr P Baker, Glebe Cottage Lincolnshire with a pen of 18 selling to JB Foods, Bradford.
Scotch Blackface topped at £134 for a pen of 38 from Band Farm selling to A & D Meats, Burnley with larger pens achieving £126 x27, £120 x24, £118 x29, £113 x66.
Cast rams still comfortably £200 plus topping at £240 from Mr W Morrison, selling to Pak Mecca Meats.
