On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6555 prime sheep, comprising 620 spring lambs, 1335 prime hoggs & 4600 cast ewes & rams.
Numbers begin to come forward here in Penrith and are handled with ease, many more can be sold with competition strong in Penrith’s ring. 620 Prime Lambs sold to average 414ppk or £178pph.
Topping todays sale at £465ppk for 2 weighing 40kg realising £186, was Messrs Savage, Words Heads. The same home topped at £214pph for 50kg. Suffolk lambs sold at 439ppk for 41kg at £180. Suffolks sold to £213 for 50kg from Messrs Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm. Many lambs sold in excess of 440ppk for all classes.
For the time of year another big show of 1335 Hoggs were forward with the trend continuing meaty heavy hoggs still in demand. Topping at £236pph for a pen of 10 hoggs weighing 71kg from Messrs J Armstrong, Highrigg. This homes first draw run of 28 hoggs sold to average £221. Messrs T Armstrong & Sons, Sceugh Dyke sold 204 clipped meaty hoggs to average 342ppk or £158pph. A vast number of leaner light hoggs are coming forward and are proving harder to sell it is still paying to feed and sell meaty hoggs.
One of the largest entries of Cast Ewes & Rams were presented for sale an overall sale average of £150.20, a result of 16 active buyers around the ring. Topping at £310 was to Mr M McNally with a superb texel ewe selling to AJ Meats Birmingham All classes throughout the sale held and matched previous sales with heavy ewes sharper on the week. Suffolks topped at £232 from Glenroyd Road selling to JB Foods Bradford. With further pens to £218 for 14 with numerous other pens £200 plus.
Mules witnessed the dearest trade ever with 574 sold to average £152.32 topping at £183 for a pen of 22 English Mules for Mr P Barker Lincolnshire selling to Mr A Dawson with other larger lots averaging £176 x 27, £174 x 29, £170 x 39, £164 x 29, £159 x 28.
Horned ewes sold with great ease with Scotch Blackface averaging £118.08. Topping at £138 for a pen of 22 from Dallowie Farm and a pen of 30 averaging £137 from Little Farm selling to Mr R Skelton.
Swaledales topped at £125 with strength regularly achieving £110 plus.
Cast Rams with weight comfortably made £200 plus topping at £218 on 2 occasions from Mr T Mackenzie and Mr M McNally selling to Mr A Dawson.
