Prime Sheep - 29.05.24
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,005 prime sheep, comprising 272 spring lambs, 1,500 prime hoggs & 3,234 cast ewes & rams.
272 Prime Lambs were forward on Wednesday with trade expected to be less. However, trade surpassed many expectations to a whole sale average of 421ppk or £181 pph. Many more are needed weekly to fulfil demand. Topping todays sale at 481ppk for a pen of 6 at 42kg achieving £202 from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside, with the same home topping price per head for 2 at 45kg achieving £216. Suffolk Lambs topped at £210 for 2 at 58kg from Messrs R J & R J Benson, Kettleside. The figures speak for themselves and lambs and many more can be easily sold here weekly at Penrith.
1500 Hoggs were presented here at Penrith with meaty well finished hoggs remaining very good to sell with anything slightly leaner or poorer falling away. Quite steeply meaty hoggs were few and far between but topped again at 470ppk from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck for a pen of 4 at 40kg or £188. Top price per head of £228 came on 2 occasions both from Messrs W Murray & Sons, Prior House firstly for a pen of 6 at 62kg then secondly for a pen of 4 at 66kg. This homes run of 26 heavy hoggs sold to average £207.38. Messrs T E Irving & Sons, East Cliff also sold heavy hoggs with this homes run of 120 averaging £194.79.
A record number of 15 active buyers were forward to witness a superb entry of over 3000 Cast Ewes & Rams resulting in a sale average of £154.64, with most classes up a comfortable £10 ahead on the week.
Topping at £302 was Mr M McNally with a superb Texel Ewe selling to weekly customers A J Meats, Birmingham. Numerous Ewes consistently £200 plus with Mr J J Crichton’s, Loughrigg consignment averaging £244.86.
Suffolk’s once again were a highlight in the sale with Mr C Abernethy, Belvedene topping at £235 for 3 pures and plenty of others over £200. With 652 sold to average £175.18. Plus, a pen of 13 achieving a top of £230.
Mule Ewes sold with the greatest of ease with 504 sold to average £149.67 topping at £184 from Messrs R & L Jenkinson, Dunfell House with superb Heavy Ewes selling to Mr A Dawson, larger pens achieved £170 x28, £169 x18, £168 x33, £166 x14, £160 x20, £158 x49, £156 x47.
Horned Ewes sold exceptionally well with 282 Scotch Blackface Ewes averaging £114.74 topping at £154 for 6 from Messrs J Armstrong, Highrigg with leading pens again achieving big money, 12x £146, 14x £133, 23x £130, 37x £124 & 29x £124.
Plenty of Rams £200 ahead plus topping at £250 for Texels selling to S & S Meats.
