Rearing Calves & Stirks 240524
On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 180 Rearing Calves and Stirks forward.
One of the dearest trades seen here in Penrith, possibly ever, for all classes of youngstock. A lovely twelve-month-old Limousin cross heifer topped today’s trade at £1,010 from Mr B R Davidson, West View. This home’s run of five suckler-bred yearling heifers sold to average £946.
British Blues sold to £850 for five twelve-month-old bullocks from Mr B Hogg, Cairnbridge Farm. Bull stirks also sold well, with six-month-old British Blues selling to £670 from Messrs J M & R M Haston, Dearham Hall.
Black & White bullocks topped at £640 for a seven-month-old Friesian from Messrs J & B Donald & Son, Lamonby Hall.
Calves were on fire with weaned calves catching the biggest rise. Topping this section at £580 was a two-month-old Charollais bull from Messrs J A H Walton & Son, Bank View. British Blues closely followed at £545 for a six-week-old bull from Brackenburgh Home Farm.
Many calves sold in excess of £500 and all classes of heifers eased over the £400 mark, topping at £485 for a pair of British Blues from Skirwith Abbey.
Black & White calves sold to a top of £330 for a pair of fifteen-week-old pure Friesians from Messrs Mattocks, Auldby Farm. This run of six averaged £315.
Young calves sold exceptionally well with Messrs W Threlfell & Son, Plumpton Head, topping at £335 for a four-week-old British Blue bull calf. This run of 19 Bule calves, all under four weeks of age averaged £230. Hereford calves topped at £270 for a pair of three-week-olds from Dolphenby Farming.
