Prime Sheep - 15.05.24
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,386 prime sheep, comprising 247 Spring Lambs, 2,116 prime Hoggs & 3,023 Cast Ewes & Rams.
A larger entry of 247 Prime Lambs were forward again with a strong demand. A whole sale average of 438ppk.
Topped off at 516ppk for a pen of 5 Beltex Lambs weighing 38kg realising £196 from Messrs Metcalfe, Holme Farm closely followed at 502ppk for 41kg realising £206 for Continentals from Messrs E S & D Noble, Mill Farm.
Top price per head of £218 came for 50kg from Messrs T F & G L Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm for a Texel x from Messrs Metcalfe, Holme Farm selling 2 at 46kg to £217 or 472ppk. Suffolk Lambs sold to 462ppk or £194 for 4 from Messrs E S & D Noble, Mill Farm.
2,116 Hoggs were forward with meaty hoggs still very good to sell easily 400ppk plus. However leaner store type Hoggs are showing more resistance. Over 1300 Hoggs were heavies today. Topping today’s sale at 500ppk came for a pen of 4 Beltex Hoggs at 40kg achieving £200 from Messrs R W & G Dickinson, High Knipe.
Top price per head of £250 was achieved for 2 at 60kg or 417ppk from Messrs W & S E Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall, following at £248 came for 3 at 58kg or 428ppk from Messrs W Murray & Sons, Prior House, this homes run of 40 outstanding Hoggs sold to average £223.25. Messrs Baker, Glebe Cottage a first time Hogg consigner here at Penrith showed 129 expertly fed Hoggs to average £217.26.
In the Ewe section as we head into the middle of May numbers still keep flooding in. A whole sale average of £142.21 was achieved still leading compared to other centres across the country but nether the less resistance was most certainly.
Witnessed especially after the blistering trades witnessed lately. The sale topped at £280 for Pure Texel Ewes from Backmuir Livestock and also Holme House with a pen of 10 all selling to Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham.
The heavy Ewes still comfortably £180-£210, topping at £235 with Suffolk x Texels. Mules topped at £176 from Messrs T A Robson & Son, Malton selling to Mr A Dawson.
Horned Ewes sold with the greatest ease topline at £134 from Mr M Allan, Knock Hall. Cast Rams still comfortably £200 ahead plus.
