Prime Sheep - 13.03.24

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5985 prime sheep, comprising of 3121 prime hoggs & 2864 cast ewes & rams.

Another flying trade for 3121 hoggs forward, with a whole sale average of £188.24 per head up £71 per head on the year and SQQ of 417ppk.
Top price of 534ppk was achieved for 4 Continental hoggs from Messrs A J & F M Harrison, Grange Hall, weighing 38kg realising £203, the same home sold another pen of 15, weighing 38kg realising £201 or 529ppk. Messrs Harrisons run of 46 exceptional hoggs, averaged 515.86ppk.

Top price per head of £244 for a single Beltex Lamb, from Messrs F Savage & Son, Petteril Green weighing 63kg/387ppk.

A pen of 9 Continentals from Holme House, weighing 55kg achieved £241 or 438ppk. Numerous sheep sold in excess of £200/500ppk.
Messrs Holliday, Clea Mire sold his run of 15 expertly finished continental hoggs to average £230.67. Suffolk Hoggs from Grange Walls realised 500ppk for 40kg/£200, the same home sold 25 Suffolks, weighing 59kg realising £237.

Mule hoggs sold exceptionally well up to 396ppk for a pen of 24, weighing 47kg, realising £186 from Messrs Maughan, Street House. Also topping at £193 for 51kg Mules, from Messrs Armstrong, Sceugh Dyke.
All classes of hill bred hoggs are growing into huge demand. Many pens of Scotch and Cheviot hoggs over 400ppk. Blackface hoggs realised £191, for 49kg from Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow. PPK topped at 407ppk from Messrs Dickinson, North Netherscales for 10, weighing 44kg, realising £179.

Cheviots realised 420ppk for 20, weighing 40kg achieving £168 from Messrs Ivinson, Skelling. Swaledale Hoggs sold to £184 for 50kg from Messrs Ivinson, Hole House.

Numbers in the Cast Ewe ring lightened ever so slightly but demand was as great as seen for quite a while with a overall sale average of £137.45 being achieved, up £13 on the week.

The sale topped at £320 twice with 90 heads selling in excess of £200. Topping at £320 twice, firstly from Glenroyd Road and secondly from Mr M Barack, Aberdeenshire both selling to Mr J Linsley. A pen of 7 Texel ewes ahead £290 from Kedzlie Farms selling to Pak Mecca Meats.

Suffolks once again stole the show with 470 selling to an average of £153.91 topping at £250 from Mr C Abernethy, Belvedene, Aberdeenshire and numerous offers £200 plus.

Comfortably plenty of pens of ewes £8 – 10 ahead more on the week, Mule ewes averaged £127.11 topping at £152 for a pen of Scotch Mules from Backmuir Livestock selling to J B Foods, Bradford.

Horned ewes saw the largest lift comfortably £10 ahead up on the week especially the Swaledale ewes. Topping at £114 and closely followed by 22 at £112.

60 Cast Rams sell on average of £146.62 topping at £220 for a pure Texel Rams but once again plenty achieving between £170 - £200 ahead.

All in all, numbers are required for next weeks sale with orders this week being uncompleted by considerable numbers.
