Prime Sheep 271223
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale, with another good entry of 5,702 prime sheep forward, comprising of 2,954 prime lambs & 2,748 cast ewes and rams.
A fabulous sale was had with trade once again dearer on the week, averaging a cracking £130/293ppk.
The sale topped at 364ppk for a great single lamb, weighing 36kg from Messrs Holliday, Clea Mire, realising £131.
Demand for heavy lambs 43kg plus was exceptionally strong, topping at £161 for a pair of fantastic Continental lambs, weighing 52kg from Messrs Holliday & Graham, Bolton Wood Lane Farm. Messrs AH Ritson, Ireby Hall, sold a pen of 24 Continental lambs, weighing 58kg to £156.
Suffolk lambs topped at £150 for a pen of 3 from Messrs J Carrick & Sons, Ireshope Plains.
A pen of 13 Mule lambs achieved £139 for 52kg from Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck.
Many more could easily have been sold to vendors’ advantage.
A blistering trade was witnessed in the cast ewe ring with an overall sale average of £100.22 being achieved. The sale topped at £270 for a pen of Texel ewes from Shethin Farm, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats Ltd. All classes sold exceptionally well throughout the day, with more required for next week’s sale.
Trade of the day went to Messrs W H & F Wood, Well Head Farm, Workington, with a run of 20 Beltex ewes to average £187, topping at £196 for a pen of fifteen, also purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.
Heavy ewes were comfortably selling in the region of £150-£170. Backmuir Livestock sold Scotch Mule ewes to a top of £134, this was followed by a pen of 28 achieving £122, and again followed at £113 for a pen of 31.
Horned ewes took a huge lift, selling with great ease. Swaledales achieved a top of £78 for a pen of 13 from Messrs Fleming & Wilson, Low Mill. Pen after pen of Scotch Blackfaced ewes sold for £80-£90, topping at £94.
Cast rams were comfortably selling for £150 plus, topping at £200 for a Texel from Messrs RM & SC Jenkinson, Lower Gate Farm
