Prime Sheep - 18.10.23

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,130 prime sheep, comprising of 2989 prime lambs & 3,177 cast ewes & rams.

Another blistering sale was held in Penrith with trade exceptional for the time of year the whole sale average was 275ppk / 284sqq or £127.50 per head £3 - £4 dearer than other local outlets.

This weeks average is exactly £20 dearer on the same week last year. Meat and weight are still the key to top rates. Top price of the day £159 came for a single Texel x heavy lamb weighing 61kg closely followed at £158 for three at 60kg from Messrs R W Sowerby & Sons, Sycamore Rise. Top price per kilo of 351ppk came for a cracking single Beltex lamb from Messrs R G Todd, Crosby Hall weighing 39kg achieving £137 purchased by Mr R Vivers, an outstanding first consignment of lambs from Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall selling a fabulous run of 24 Beltex lambs at 48kg to average £150.30, topping with a pen of eight at £154 for 46kg.

Suffolk lambs sold to 286ppk for a pen of eight weighing 51kg from Messrs Coulston, Hole House achieving £146. Mule lambs sold exceptionally well to a top ppk of 260ppk for a pen of six weighing 42kg at £109 per head. Top price per head of £131 for Mules for a pen of four weighing 54kg from Messrs Mounsey, Throstle Hall. Messrs Lowis, Waterside sold 36 Mule Lambs at 49kg to £124. Many vendors sold runs of sheep to average well in excess of £140 per head.

Once again, every pen in the auction mart was full with a very strong ringside of 15 competitive buyers present ensuring all classes saw a rise, especially the horned Ewes and Continental Ewes. Quality to sell £200 per head topping at £284 from regular supporters Mr H Mcrae, Huntly.

A consignment of 33 Beltex Ewes from M/s Dent, Elm House averaged £166.64 with several pens £200 plus topline at £210 purchased by PAK Mecca Meats, Birmingham.

Heavy Ewes saw plenty of strong bidding with Glenroyd Farm, County Antrim selling Suffolk X Texels to £185 and pure Suffolks to £170. Heavy Mule Ewes comfortably getting to over £100 ahead topping at £126, from Brackenburgh and two large pens of Ewes achieving £114 from Backmuir Livestock and Mr R Jenkinson, Dunfell House. A ringfull of 14 Swaledale Ewes from Messrs Fleming & Wilson, Low Mill achieved £75 purchased by Mr A Dawson. Further Hill Ewes sold well with Herdwicks averaging £59.58 topping at £94 and other pens of 20 averaging £70 and 33 heads averaged £68 twice.



All Ewes sold achieved an average of £93.85 up £8 on the week for a very similar show.

Cast Rams sold with ease especially those with weight regularly to £150 plus. Topline at £185 from Greystoke House and Mr J F Page, Farmanby achieving £173 for North Country Cheviots.
