Prime Sheep 041023

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,427 prime sheep, comprising of 2,164 prime lambs & 3,263 cast ewes & rams.

Another good entry of prime lambs saw trade sharper throughout the day, with heavies seeing a lift in price on the week.

A whole sale SQQ average of 276ppk was achieved, with a top price of £159 for 2 cracking Beltex Lambs from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands these also topped PPK at 367ppk/43kg. This price was closely followed at 363ppk for a pen of 14 Beltex Lambs, weighing 43kg, realising £156 from per head from Messrs A J & F M Harrison, Grange Hall who sold a fabulous run of 56 Beltex lambs to average, £138/338ppk.

Heavy Lambs sold to a sharper trade with 48-52kg showing the greatest lift with Suffolk lambs to 269ppk from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands. With another lot of Suffolks weighing 55kg realising £148 from the same home. Messrs Hird, Broomhills had Suffolk lambs to realise £125 /260ppk.

Mules topped at £113 for a pen of 10, weighing 48kg, from Messrs Clarke, Howgill Castle.

Another monster show of cast ewes and rams forward, with all sold averaging £96.52, up £14 per head on the week. The sale topped at £270 for a single Texel ewe from Greenacres, Aberdeen, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.

Over 40 ewes sold in excess of £200 with this section now becoming short of requirements, all Texels in the sale sold to average £155.94.

First-time vendors Messrs Knight, Stepheny Farm, sold a consignment of 111 Beltex ewes to average a staggering £141.90, topping at £190.

Heavy ewes held well in value with Suffolks topping at £162 from Glenroyd Road.
Several pens of fat Mules sold in excess of £100, topping at £118 from Messrs S Ellwood & Son, Old Mill Flatt.

Backmuir Livestock rocked the ring with a pen of 20 Scotch Blackface ewes at £90, with further pens at £80 from various vendors. All Blackies sold to average £63.57.

Cast rams with strength were regularly £150 plus, topping at £170 from Backmuir Livestock.
