Mule Gimmer Lambs 2023
On Tuesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Annual Sale of 10,000 North of England Mule Gimmer Lambs and Cheviot Mule Gimmers, generously sponsored by Marsh Commercial, Eden Farm Supplies, PFK Land Agency & I’Anson Quality Feeds.
A very pleasing average of £119.68 was achieved on the day, especially considering the large entry of running lambs forward.
Customers were keen for all classes with buyers from all over the United Kingdom here to take advantage of the variety on offer.
Champion honours went to Messrs Lord, West Dowgill, with a pen of strong bodied lambs with great characteristics, purchased by Mr J Barker on behalf of Mr P Keyes, Preston.
Messrs MTP & SD Wills, Fawcett Park, sold a wonderful run of lambs, selling two pens over £200 topping at £225, with both pens purchased by Mr T H Gibson & Son, Kendal. This run of well-presented sheep with great skins and body, averaging £137.
Leading run average went to Messrs P & A Sowerby, Cote House Barn, with a consignment of 130 to average £140, topping at £230 for their third placed pen in the pre-sale show, purchased by Mr J Winter.
The Cheviot-Mule section once again proved very popular, with all sold to achieve an average of £126.66, topping at £185 from Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck, with a pen of six tupping lambs, purchased by Messrs D & L Thompkins, Aylesbury. This price was closely followed at £160 from the same home, this time for their third placed pen in the pre-sale show, purchased by Messrs Holliday, Clea Mire. This consignment averaged £141.07.
First prize in the Cheviot-Mule section went to Mr R Richardson & Mr E Watts, Todd Farm, with a pen of strong lambs, which later achieved £150, selling to the judge, Mr H Wood.
The early morning judging saw the largest show of 22 pens of show sheep forward, all well worthy top pens, which were presented to this year’s North of England Mule Gimmer lamb judges Mr A Geary, Yew Tree Farm, and Mr A Cooper, Matlock, with Mr W Hird, Town Head, acting as referee and Mr W Wood, Well Head Farm, judging the Cheviot-Mules.
