Prime Sheep - 23.08.23
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,356 prime sheep, comprising of 1,612 prime lambs & 3,744 cast ewes & rams.
A good entry of lambs was forward with the general consensus being that well-finished, meaty lambs continue to be sought after, with a £15-£20 difference in price.
A 52kg Texel lamb was kindly put forward for charity from Messrs A & R Straney, Northern Ireland, with a total of £1,150 being raised in aid of Cancer Research UK. The lamb was initially bought by Mr J Linsley, Barnard Castle, for £200, who then put it back on offer, with Mr W Shearer, Mr J Routley on behalf of Yorkshire Halal and Penrith Auction Mart all matching the sale price. The lamb was finally sold for £150, again to Mr J Linsley, who purchased on behalf of Farmers Fresh Wrexham. Once the last hammer went down, Mr A Straney also matched the price of £200. With thanks to all of the purchasers, and an extra thank you to Mr Straney for his generosity.
The best Continental type lambs continue to sell very well, regularly in excess of 320ppk. Messrs D & BA Bousfield, Glaslyn House, sold a lovely pen of 10 Texel lambs, weighing 40kg to £144 (360ppk). Messrs Gardner, Glebelands, sold a run of 29 Beltex lambs to average £141 for 44kg.
Heavy lambs remain very popular with Suffolks topping at £157 for a pen of 4, weighing 59kg from Messrs JM & J Fisher & Daughters, Holme Wrangle. Mule lambs topped at £134 for 55kg from Messrs F & SA Edmondson, Nether Houses Farm, with other pens realising £119 from Messrs TE Clarke, Howgill Castle.
A record number of cast ewes were presented to a complete ringside of both wholesalers and grazing customers with all classes sold averaging a healthy £103.56.
A total of 651 Texel bred ewes averaged a staggering £152.27 topping at £285 from Glenroyd Farm, selling to Mr James Linsley, with over 60 ewes still achieving well in excess of £200 ahead. Numbers in large quantities just don’t seem to effect and dampen the trade, new orders and buyers keep ensuring our trade leads other markets.
520 Ewes sold over £150 ahead with weight very good to sell with English Mules topping at £130 from Messrs F & S A Edmonson, Netherhouses, Ulverston selling to Mr A Dawson with numerous pens £178 plus, and a ringful of 22 Cheviot Mule Ewes achieving £126 from the Aberdeen consignment from Mr C Abernethy, Belvedene.
A consignment of 100 heavy Texel X Mule Ewes from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm achieving £158.31. Several new vendors again taking the time to travel and take advantage of a ring of 10-14 competitive buyers on a weekly basis. Horned ewes topped at £103 from Messrs GD and JP Nelson, Hedwynds with a pen of strong Swaledale Ewes from the same home selling Herdwicks to £103!!
All classes are required for next week, please advise entries to Andrew Maughan on 07717611952, or Paul Gardner on 07552 589141.
