Prime Sheep 160823

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,440 prime sheep, comprising of 1,355 prime lambs & 3,085 cast ewes & rams.

A smaller show of prime sheep was forward, meaty lambs were a very similar trade on the week with well-finished lambs falling short of buyers’ requirements. The sale topped at £170 for a cracking Texel lamb, weighing 54kg from Mr A Cleasby, Eamont Terrace, purchased by
Mr S Shan. A top price per kilo of 341ppk was achieved for a lovely single Beltex lamb from
Mr G Fisher, Midtown Farm, also purchased by Mr S Shan.

Suffolk lambs topped at 291ppk for a pen of 18, weighing 49kg from Messrs AJ Greenop, Town Foot, realising £143. Mule lambs topped at £110 for 45kg from Messes Fleming & Wilson, Low Mill.

Messrs J & HD Langcake, Sandhills, sold an outstanding run of 73 lambs to average 306ppk/£140.78 for 46kg.

Cast ewes and rams came forward in larger numbers once again with trade taking another lift and all selling to average £111.34, up £13 per head on the week. A total of 93 ewes sold in excess of £200 and some again breaking the £300 barrier, topping at £310 for a pair of Texels, closely followed at £305 for a pen of 4, all from Tarn End, purchased by Yorkshire Halal, with this consignment of 81 averaging £189.12.

Over 500 ewes sold in excess of £150, with heavy fat ewes very good to sell, Suffolk ewes topped at £175 for a pen of 3 from Backmuir Livestock, purchased by Mr D Kemp. Mule ewes with weight were regularly £120 plus, topping at £134 from Messrs MT & MAG Anderson, Corskellie. A consignment of 18 Continental ewes, built like battleships, averaged £173.28 from AM Connon & Sons, Skilmafilly Farm.
