Prime Sheep Report 080323

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,324 prime sheep, comprising of 2,078 prime hoggs & 2,246 cast ewes & rams.

A smaller show of prime hoggs was forward to a sharper trade across the board. A whole sale average of 245p/kg was achieved, with an SQQ average of 279p/kg.

Lighter weight hoggs were still short of buyers’ requirements. Todays sale topped at 370p/kg for a pen of five cracking Beltex hoggs weighing 40kg, realising £148. The best Beltex hoggs sold regularly upwards of 330p/kg.

Top price per head on the day was £160, this was achieved for a pair of great 55kg Beltex hoggs from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, who’s run of 47 hoggs sold to average £147.50. Messrs F Savage & Sons, Petteril Green, sold a great run of 39 Continental hoggs to average 313p/kg (£138.59).

Messrs A Tiffin & Sons, Wham Head Farm, sold a pen of 10 Blackfaced hoggs weighing 42kg for £102.

Mule hoggs topped at £115 for two from Messrs WE Strong Midtown, weighing 56kg.

Another bonanza sale of cast ewes was witnessed with both the demand and trade rising once again. The sale averaged a staggering £118.20, up £7 per head, topping at £278 for a pair of Texel ewes from Mr A Straney, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats. A further 46 ewes sold in excess of £200 on the day.

Another thumping consignment of 136 Texel X & Suffolk X ewes from Messrs AM Connon & Sons, Skilmafilly Farm, averaged £153.73, topping the Suffolk section at £165 for a pen of eight. All Suffolk ewes sold in the sale to average £136.19.

A packet of thirteen English Mules from Messrs JD Bowness, Cliburn Hall achieved £133, with Mules selling to a much sharper lift.

Horned ewes fell short of buyers’ requirements on the week, topping at £112 for a pen of eleven Rough Fells from Mr P Wilson, The Wath. Swaledales topped at £92 for a lot of three from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, purchased by Mr A Dawson.

A ring full of ten Continental cast rams from Holme Farm achieved £182.
