Rearing Calves & Stirks 170223
On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 130 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
The sale topped at £890 for a lovely 8-month-old Limousin heifer from Messrs RW & AJ Jackson, Clarks Farm, purchased by Mr B Todd, Brampton, this home also sold another heifer to £870.
Stirks were in huge demand with Messrs J & B Donald & Son, Lamonby Hall, showing a great run of 10-month-old dairy-bred bullocks and heifers to a top of £730 for a pen of five Herefords. Messrs EA & A Dodd, Roanstrees sold a lovely pen of four 10-month-old Fleckvieh bullocks to £705. Mr J Campbell sold a consignment of five 7-month-old dairy-bred British Blue bulls and heifers to average £651.
Calves were far sharper yet again with the best types seeing another rise in trade, this section topped at £500 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus bulls from Messrs Messenger, Howes Farm.
Heifers were very popular today, topping at £490 for a British Blue from Mr JR Tiplady, The Bramery, with this consignment of ten 4 to 6-week-old British Blue and Aberdeen Angus calves averaging £366. Messrs JAH Walton & Son, sold a fantastic Charolais to £385, purchased by Mr C Riley, Penrith.
Black & White calves topped at £210 for a bull calf from Skirwith Abbey, purchased by Mr D Holgate.
