Prime Sheep - 25.01.23
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,702 prime sheep, comprising of 3,249 prime hoggs & 2,453 cast ewes & rams.
Another huge show of Prime Lambs with several new venders from all over the country taking advantage of the trade here on a weekly basis. The sale averaged a very healthy 247ppk with numerous pens 300ppk plus. Topping at 336ppk went to Messrs Lowis, Galloper Park with a pen of 39kg’s, realising £131 purchased by Yorkshire Halal. With this consignment of 43 averaging 314ppk.
Topping the sale at £146 went to Messrs Pearson, Manor Farm with a pen of excellent well finished, 52kg Texel x Beltex Hoggs purchased by Mr N Lomax, with this consignment to average 54kg / £137.51 (254ppk).
Heavy butchers Lambs totalled £140 for 47kg’s from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck achieving 298ppk purchased by Mr M Bowe.
Small lambs sold well with Scotch Blackface achieving 230ppk / £83 for 36kg’s.
Messrs M T P & S D Wills, Fawcett Park sold a ring full of Mule Lambs weighing 52kg’s totalling £120 purchased by Mr J Linsley. And Suffolk x Texel Lambs weighing 58kg’s achieving £143 from Mr W Hird, Town Head purchased by Mr N Lomax.
Cast Ewes and Rams held strong with prices being very stable from start to finish. This being a good reflection of 12 active buyers. Oceans of Ewes £140 - £180 with quality still regularly £200 plus topping at £260 from Messrs G P Williams & Co, Bryn Dansi, North Wales with this consignment averaging £210 with the same home selling a Ram to £195 being purchased by Mr D Towers.
Heavy Suffolk x Ewes regularly over £140 topping at £168. Plenty of strong demand for Ewes with a pen of 17 Scotch Mules achieving £116 from Backmuir Livestock purchased by Mr A Dawson and Messrs G & H R Shields, Tarn House selling a Bluefaced Leicester to £158!!
Horned Ewes & Hill Ewes still managed to held recent rates with Gate Farm selling Scotch Blackface to £86 for a pen of 17.
