Prime Sheep

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,872 prime sheep, comprising of 3,172 prime lambs & 3,700 cast ewes and rams.

Another fantastic day within Penrith mart with new vendors travelling from all over the county and further afield to take advantage of our booming trade and great crowd of buyers.

The sale achieved an SQQ average of 260ppk, with a large offering of heavy lambs forward. A total of 311 lambs sold in excess of 300ppk, with 220 realising over £140. The sale topped at 348ppk for a cracking Beltex lamb from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands, this was closely followed by another fantastic single lamb at 346ppk from Messrs MTP & SD Wills, Fawcett Park, with both lots purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn.

The whole sale averaged £117.24, up £2 on the week. Topping at £163 for a great 61kg Texel X lamb from Messrs Lowis, Waterside Farm, purchased by Mr J Linsley, this exquisite run of 105 excellently finished lambs averaged £135.87/260ppk for 52kg with over half the run being Mule lambs.

First-time lamb consignor Messrs T & J Airey, New Grange Farm, sold a fantastic run of 50 Beltex X lambs to average 330ppk/£140 for 46kg. Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot, brought his first-draw of lambs forward to average £149.43.

Mule lambs were in high demand, topping at £139 for Cheviot Mules from Messrs EJ Ivinson & Sons, Skelling Farm, for 53kg realising 262ppk. English Mules, weighing 55kg, topped at £137 from Messrs Lowis, Waterside House, this home also topped at 251ppk for a pen of 45kg, realising £113.

A huge show of cast ewes graced a full ringside of buyers, with the whole sale averaging £101.20, topping at £302 for a superb Texel ewe from Messrs AH Ritson, Ireby Hall, purchased by Mr J Linsley. Over 90 ewes sold in excess of £200 per head. Messrs T & J Airey, New Grange Farm, sold a consignment of 25 Texel X Beltex ewes to average a staggering £229.17.

Cast Rams topped at £210 for a Bluefaced Leicester from first-time vendors Kilnstown Farm, purchased by Mr A Dawson.

Pens of strong horned ewes regularly achieved over £90 per head, a pen of 18 Scotch Blackfaces realised £98 from Mr L Skelton, Low House Farm, with this home also selling a pen of 13 Swaledales to £89.

Herdwicks from noted breeders Messrs Bland & Barnes, Knott Houses, achieved £92 per head.
New vendors were present again from Ulverston, Newton Stewart and as far as Banchory, all taking advantage of the competitive ringside of buyers with customers going home highly delighted with returns.
