Prime Sheep - 09.11.22

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,147 prime sheep, comprising of 3,044 prime lambs & 3,103 cast ewes and rams.

Numbers continue to grow in Penrith, a great result of our healthy ring of active buyers for all classes. An average of 258ppk was achieved including in excess of half the sale being heavy lambs. Topping at 352ppk went to Messrs M Bindloss & Son, Shap Abbey with a pen of 42kg Beltex X Texel lambs totalling £148 purchased by Mr M Bowe.

Leading in the averages once again went to Messrs Lowis, Galloper Park with a superb consignment of 26 Beltex X lambs weighing 40.5kg’s totalling £127.69 (315ppk). Topping at 331ppk with a pen of 39kg’s totalling £129 purchased by Vivers Scotlamb Ltd.

A consignment of 46 Mule lambs grass fed from Messrs G & H R Shields, Tarn House achieved an average of 44kgs, (£106.50 / 242ppk).

A sale average of £116.60 was achieved topping at £152 for a pen of 63kg’s from Messrs J & A Wear, Milburn Grange purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn.

A superb consignment of 70 Suffolk X Mule lambs from Mr R Jenkinson, Dunfell House averaged 256ppk, topping at 275ppk for a pen of 20, weighing 54kg’s totalling £139 purchased by Mr J Linsley.

A consignment of 40 Suffolk x & Texel x Mule lambs averaged 54.5kg from Mr W R Wilson, South View totalling £137 (251ppk).

The returns speak for themselves with returns for cast ewes and tups being highly satisfying for vendors. A total of 22 lots, 62 Texel bred sheep sold in excess of £200 topping at £290 from Mr W Morrison, South Bogbain purchased by Mr J Linsley.

Messrs G & J E Bell, Far Broom once again smashed the cast ewe average with their consignment of Beltex X Texel’s achieving £229.67!!

Mr J M Thomspon, Town Foot sold a consignment of Beltex X Texel ewes to average £210.24 a pen of 14 achieving £220 purchased by Yorkshire Halal. A different rise in the mule section topping at £125 from M/s W W Armstrong, Stoneybeck closely followed at £120 with a pen of 17 from Messrs J J Henderson, Park House purchased by Mr A Dawson.

Plenty of cast rams selling in excess of £146 topping at £165 for a pair of Suffolk tups from Holme House.

Horned ewes attracted more bidding with a pen of 27 Scotch Blackface achieving £83 and a pen of 60 achieving £72.
