Annual Hillbred Ewe Show and Sale 061022

Annual Hill Bred Ewe Show & Sale 2022

Thursday 6th October 2021

On Thursday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their annual show & sale of 5,779 uncrossed & crossed Swaledale, Herdwick & Cheviot ewes, shearlings and gimmer lambs, kindly sponsored by PFK Land Agency & Peter Horn Mobile Sheep Dipping.

As the backend breeding sheep sales at Penrith come to an end, demand reflected the buoyant trade all season, with purchasers keen to purchase from many local genuine flocks.

The sale opened with an entry of just shy of 1000 hill bred gimmer lambs. Strong lambs sold exceptionally well, if anything short of requirements topping at £130 for the first prize pen from Messrs G D & J P Nelson, Hedwynds, purchased by Mr C Holmes, this consignment averaged £99.50.

Following this section, we moved into the Herdwick breed, which brought spirited bidding to the ring with all sold averaging £93.68. Topping at £400 for a superb Herdwick 3 crop ewe, with all the makings of a show ewe, from Mr G Bland, Clea Hall selling to Mr Harryman, Hawkshead. The same home also received the Racy Ghyll Trophy for the best pair of ewes, which later realised £380 ahead.

The big buzz of the day was the Swaledale draft ewe category, attracting customers from all over the UK, with purchasers admitting this is the signature sale for draft ewes.
The sale topped at £750 from Mr C Ridley, Haltcliffe with a pair of excellent 3 crop ewes, purchased by regular buyers Mr M Conway, Northern Ireland. This run of 180 shearlings to 3 crop ewes averaged £205.

Champion honours went to Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside with 10 outstanding bright ewes with great length, bone and carcase, achieving £500 selling to Mr E G Bulman, Northallerton with the same home taking the award for the first prize shearlings achieving £400 selling to Mr M L Staley, Kirkby Stephen.

Demand all day held very strong with buyers keen to purchase strong ewes with body and bone plus being vaccinated for both abortions which proved very popular to the purchasers

A top class show entry of draft Swaledale ewes, shearlings & gimmer lambs drew much praise from the judges Mr T Brogden, Hellbeck, Mr E Bulman, Northallerton and referee Mr S Buckle, Bleathgill.

A fantastic show of Herdwick ewes were forward in both pairs and pens of ten to the judge of this section, Mr P Bland.
