Mule Gimmer Lambs 2022
On Tuesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Annual Sale of 10,000 North of England Mule Gimmer Lambs and Cheviot Mule Gimmers, generously sponsored by Marsh Commercial, Eden Farm Supplies & PFK Land Agency.
Despite the recent sales and trade, Penrith smashed all expectations with a sale average of £121.02 being achieved, only a couple of pounds back on the year.
The sale topped at £300 firstly with the champion pen from Messrs Lord, West Dowgill with a pen of outstanding well-presented lambs, purchased by Mr J Winter, Clickham.
Also achieving £300 was our 4th Prize pen from Messrs S Allan and Sons, Greenhow selling to Mr H Tustian.
Many consignments averaged the same as last year, even considering more running lambs were on offer. The leading average for the sale went to Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House at £137 for a run of 300 strong bodied lambs. Also achieving an average of £137 went to Messrs G A & D E Thompson, Howburn, with a superb consignment of 120 well-presented lambs, with great length and skin.
Our Cheviot Mule section proved very popular with a sale average of £129.58, many more are required to fulfil demand. Topping at £155 for our champion pen of clean lambs with great power from Mr AG Morton, Bank Hall, purchased by our Judge Mr E Holliday.
Leading averages in this section went to Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck, with 40 excellently-turned-out lambs averaging £140.24, topping at £155 purchased by Mr A Geary.
The early morning judging saw the largest and strongest show of 21 pens of show sheep, all well worthy top pens, which were presented to this year’s North of England Mule Gimmer lamb judges Mr J Baty, Hethersgill and Mr A Corlett, Banbury, with Mr A Geary, Yew Tree Farm acting as referee and Mr E Holliday, Clea Mire judging the Cheviot-Mules.
