Breeding Rams 140922

On Tuesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Annual Prize Show & Sale of 635 Suffolk, Texel, Beltex, Charollais and Continental Breeding Rams, generously sponsored by Marsh Commercial.

One of the best shows of breeding rams was forward to the largest ringside of buyers seen in a very long time. A total of 72 rams sold in excess of £1000, a market record.

The sale topped at £1900, a breed record at Penrith, for a superb, strong-boned and bodied Suffolk shearling from Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot, purchased by Messrs A & ED Booth, Settle, with this run averaging a staggering £1108.33. All Suffolk shearlings sold averaged £717.

Next up at £1700 was the first-placed Beltex shearling from Messrs TN & J Hall, Ainstable Hall, purchased by the judge Mr J Brewer, Crosby Hall, with this consignment of pure-bred rams averaging £1212.50.

Ram lambs from regular consignors, Mr J Hewson, Burgh Head, achieved £1050 for the first-placed Suffolk purchased by Mr D Harrison, Wigton, with numerous Suffolk lambs realising £700-£900.

Pure-bred Texel rams topped at £1500 from Messrs Wales, Thackwood, for a well-presented and powerful ram purchased by Messrs N & O Frith, Cross Keys.

Purchasers commented all day on the quality of rams on offer and the improvement of consignments on the year, with many saying you would struggle to find a better show anywhere else, a credit to all vendors who were rewarded in their returns.

The early morning prize show drew much interest. The Texel and Continental ram judging was in the capable hands of Mr J Brewer, Crosby Hall, who awarded the Challenge Trophy, given by the Solway & Tyne Texel Breeders Club to Messrs G Wilkinson, Arkleby House, for his first placed Texel shearling.
