Prime Sheep 070922
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,402 prime sheep, comprising of 1,195 prime lambs & 2,207 cast ewes and rams.
Quality provided some extreme returns with 25 pens selling in excess of 300ppk, topping at 345ppk for a pen of 40kg Texel cross Beltex lambs from Messrs RG Todd, Crosby Hall, realising £138 purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
An SQQ average of 266ppk was achieved. Messrs AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall, led the top averages, selling a run of 42 Beltex cross Texel lambs to average 313ppk/£124.10/39kg. Messrs Gardner, Glebelands, averaged 313ppk/£130.76/41.5kgs for a run of superb, well-presented lambs.
The sale topped at £150 per head for a cracking Beltex cross lamb, weighing 47kg from Mr JJ Crichton, Loughrigg, purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn.
Heavy lambs sold exceptionally well all day with 52kg and above averaging 240ppk, with Messrs Coulston, Hole House, selling a pen of 20 Suffolk cross Mule lambs, weighing 50kg to £127/254ppk, purchased by Mr N Lomax.
The whole sale averaged £116.76, with Messrs PD Hird, Broomhills, averaging 261ppk/£131.74/50kg, topping at £145 for 57kg, selling to Mr N Lomax.
Demand throughout the cast ewe and ram section was very strong, with weight and flesh equally as dear as previous sales, if not dearer. Topping the sale at £255 was a pen of Texel ewes from Mr C Abernethy, Belvedene, selling to Mr James Linsley. This price was closely followed at £245 for a pair of Texels from Mr JJ Crichton, Loughrigg, selling to Mr W Shearer.
This consignment of quality averaged £192.73. Heavy Texel cross Mules and Suffolk cross Mules were regularly £140 plus, topping at £160 for a Suffolk cross from Messrs DG & LM Strong, Sleagill House, also purchased by Mr W Shearer. A pen of 11 Scotch Mules averaged £132 per head from Belvedene, selling to Mr A Dawson.
Horned ewes were rocking and rolling with Low House Farm selling a ring full of 20 Scotch Blackfaced ewes to achieve £100 per head, selling to Mr J Blenkhorn. Messrs F Errington sold Suffolk cross Texel rams to £170 a head, with heavy rams regularly £140 plus in the sale.
