Mule Shearlings & 2 Shears 2022
On Tuesday 6th September Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Great Annual Show & Sale of 5,217 Mule Gimmer Shearlings, '2' Shear Mule Ewes, Suffolk cross & Texel Shearlings & Ewes 3 Shear & above, kindly sponsored by Peter Horn Mobile Sheep Dipping.
One of the finest shows of breeding sheep imaginable was forward to the busiest ringside of buyers present for a lot of years, all keen to purchase grazing stock from local well-established flocks.
The sale topped at £410 per head for a pen of Charollais cross Beltex shearlings from Messrs Wales, Thackwood, purchased by Mrs D Brennand, with this consignment of powerful, well-presented sheep averaging £376. The whole euro section averaged £197.77.
First-time vendors to this sale, Messrs AW Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm, sold a consignment of 100 well-put-together Texel cross shearlings to average £233.63, topping at £305 for the first-placed pen of Continental shearlings, purchased by Mr P Dent.
The Mule 2-shear section attracted the largest buzz and trade of any on the day, with numerous annual buyers returning to secure some of the best stock possible, topping at £240 for the champion pen of bold, strong boned sheep with great character and strength from Mr BW Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, selling to the judge Mr A Layfield, this consignment of 300 averaged £197.98.
A total of 13 pens sold in excess of £200 with Messrs W & R Lawson, Stubbsgill, averaging £203.56, topping at £235 for the second placed pen of ewes, bright, lengthy sheep in excellent condition, purchased by regular buyers Messrs A & ED Booth, Settle.
Three shear ewes sold regularly in excess of £150, topping at £180 per head for a pen of 20 hand-picked, exceptional sheep from Messrs JJ & A Brough, The Clappers, purchased by Mr D Ewin, this consignment averaged £170, with all sold in this section averaging £151.89.
A much-improved show of Mule shearlings was forward on the year with a sale average of £177.82 being achieved. A shortage of good sheep that had reared lambs and were double-vaccinated for abortion with many more required to fulfil demand of our local farming purchasers. The sale topped at £230 for our champion pen of strong bodied sheep from Mr S Ridley, Half Thwaite House, Temple Sowerby, purchased by the judge Mr A Mitchell.
Next up at £220 was a great pen of 16 excellently turned out shearlings from Messrs ER & SA Holliday, Cleamire, purchased by Messrs JJ Henderson & Son, Welton, with this consignment of 100 averaging £198.35, with numerous customers commenting on the quality of this run.
The early morning judging saw a quality gathering of show pens presented to this year’s judges Mr A Layfield, Crook (Mule 2 Shears), Mr A Mitchell, Skelton (Mule Shearlings) & Mr J Hodgson, Bampton. (Continental Shearlings).
Over 20 pens of show sheep were forward, in the best of order and condition, a credit to all vendors.
