Prime Sheep 130722
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 1,518 prime sheep, comprising of 794 prime lambs & 724 cast ewes and rams.
A much smaller show of prime lambs was forward resulting in a much sharper trade than ever expected. The whole sale averaged 292ppk, topping at 358ppk for an excellent pen of 38kg Texel cross Beltex lambs from Mr WH Brass, Low Row, realising £136 purchased by Mr M Bowe, this home also sold lambs to £164 per head (328pp) purchased by Mr J Linsley.
There was plenty of demand for heavy lambs, topping at £155 for a 52kg Suffolk from Mr R Nettleton, New Rent Farm, purchased by Pickstock Foods.
Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm, sold a pen of 51kg Texel cross lambs to £156/306ppk, purchased by Mr N Lomax.
A very small show of ewes was forward compared to previous weeks, with quality also in short supply. Backmuir Livestock sold a pen of four Texel ewes to £220, purchased by Yorkshire Halal, with Holme House also achieving £220 for a pen of six, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.
Horned ewes and Cheviot ewes with flesh still sold extremely well with Messrs Ridsdale, Yew Tree Farm, selling Swaledales to a top of £110, this price was also achieved for a pen of two from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe.
A pen of seven Continental tups achieved £170 per head from Holme House, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
