Prime Sheep - 16.03.22
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,353 prime sheep, comprising of 2,316 prime lambs & 2,037 cast ewes and rams.
Another strong show of hoggs with plenty of weight on offer but even so an SQQ average of 281ppk being achieved. Peaking at 398ppk from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside, with a pen of 5 Beltex X Texel Hoggs, weighing 40kg realising £159 purchased by Yorkshire Halal with this total consignment averaging 321ppk/£140.97.
Leading in the averages went to Messrs F J & E M Mason & Sons, Sickergill with a consignment of 60 Texel X Hoggs to average 325ppk for 40kgs, realising £132.62.
Peaking in the averages as well went to a run of 59 well fed and presented hoggs from Messrs F Savage & Sons, Petteril Green to average £138.20 for 45kgs.
Also achieving £159 went to Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, with a cracking 46kg hogg, bought by Mr R Skelton.
Commercial hoggs sold well with Messrs Raine, Fog Close selling a ring full of 45kgs mule hoggs to achieve £114 ahead/253ppk and per head topping at £119 ahead from Messrs Richardson, Low Garth, weighing 48kgs.
Handy weights sold exceptionally well with Messrs Benn, Brownrigg Hall, selling Cheviot X Hoggs to 281ppk for 32kgs realising £90, purchased by Pickstock Foods.
Cast Ewes and Rams met a blistering trade, with the whole sale averaging £117 ahead, topping at £278 ahead another new market record from Backmuir Livestock purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.
As always Messrs Airey, New Grange Farm sold quality and well turned-out goods, with a consignment of 20 ewes, averaging a staggering £212.30.
Cast Rams met some fiery returns with Mr T Pearson, The Faulds selling Bluefaced Leicesters to £208 purchased by Mr A Dawson. The same home managed to receive £128 for cast Swaledale Rams, and a pen of 6 Charollais, from Holme House achieved £195!!
Horned ewes were forward in tighter numbers and demand was a strong as ever topping at £120 and a ring full of 33, achieved £113 from Holme House selling to Pickstocks Foods.
Plenty of pens of mule ewes £120-£130 with Messrs Bowness, Cliburn Hall sold some huge ships of ewes to £146.
