Prime Sheep - 06.04.22
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,730 prime sheep, comprising of 2,319 prime hoggs & 1,411 cast ewes and rams.
Another large show of prime hoggs were forward to our complete ringside of buyers, with a SQQ average of 287ppk was achieved.
Topping at 456ppk from M/s W Gribbon, Waterside with a pen of 39kg Beltex x Texel hoggs totalling £178 ahead, purchased by West Scottish Lamb, with this consignment of 32 hoggs averaging £160 / 368ppk (43kg’s).
Leading in the averages went to M/s A J & F M Harrison, Grange Hall with a run of 23 Beltex x Texel hoggs to average 395ppk / £157 for 39.5kg’s.
The sale topped at £184 for an amazing pen of 42kg Beltex x Texel hoggs from M/s R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck (443ppk) purchased by West Scottish Lamb with the consignment averaging 364ppk.
Heavy hoggs topped at £181 ahead for 50kg Beltex x Texel’s from M/s J C Robinson, Blackleases (362ppk), and M/s W & S E Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall achieving a marvellous consignment average of 265ppk / £137 for a run of 89 weighing 52kg’s.
Lightweights were in short supply with Mr J Barker, Capplegill selling a pen of South Country Cheviots 36kg’s to £107 (297ppk), purchased by Pickstock Foods.
Cast ewes and rams were in short supply and customers went home short of requirements. The sale topped at £300 ahead for a Texel ewe from Holme House being purchased by Mr J Tucker.
First time customers from Piercebridge, Mr R Morrell averaged a staggering £190.91 for there consignment a well worth trip.
Heavy ewes were in great demand, with a pen of 16 English Mule ewes achieving £150 from M/s R & A Slack, Cockley Bank purchased by Mr W Shearer.
Horned ewes met some fiery prices with a pen of 12 Scotch Blackface achieving £130.

Cast rams averaged £133.30 topping at £200 ahead from first time customers M/s Brown, Willows Farm, Seaton with a Texel x purchased to Mr D Kemp.
