Rearing Calf Report 150422
On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 123 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
The bank holiday sale most certainly brought spirit to the ring, with a very strong demand throughout the sale, buyers had travelled from as far afield as Yorkshire and Sterling.
Numerous vendors take advantage of this successful sale, with customers from as far as Ayrshire and Barnard Castle. The sale topped at £800 for a pen of ten-month-old British Blue bull stirks from Grahamsfield Farm, selling to Mr J Fields.
Mr J Harrison, Penny Hill Park sold a superb run of well-reared stirks, four to five-months-old to average £525, topping at £700 for a belting six-month-old Limousin bull.
A marvellous consignment of well-reared cattle from Messrs Messenger, Howes Farm, achieved an average of £542.50 for five-month-old British Blue bulls and heifers, this included a Beef Shorthorn bull creeping up to £550.
Messrs JM and J Fisher and Daughters, Holme Wrangle, sold a very even packet of four-month-old British Blue bulls and heifers to average £510, topping at £550 selling to Mr D Holgate, Wakefield.
Young calves sold were a much sharper trade with Messrs AD and FE Elliott, Askrigg Hall, selling three-week-old British Blue crosses to £320, slightly stronger calves topped at £410 from Messrs GL Armstrong and Son, Blunderfield East, with a ten-week-old British Blue bull.
More numbers of all classes are required for our next sale, with a very healthy ringside of buyers each sale. With demand for all types, right down to the 10-to-14-day old Holstein calves, with these achieving £40-£50 a head, this is a considerable rise in comparison to local competition.
