Prime Sheep - 02.03.22

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,298 prime sheep, comprising of 2,196 prime lambs & 2,102 cast ewes and rams.

Demand for hoggs seemed to be strong, and more spirited bidding was witnessed around the ring resulting in a SQQ average of 285ppk being achieved.

Topping the sale at 393ppk/£165 ahead went to Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside with a pen of outstanding well-presented Beltex X Hoggs, weighing 42kgs, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.

Some marvellous runs of Texel X Beltex Hoggs were forward, with Messrs Lowis, Galloper Park leading the averages, with there consignment of 30 hoggs, weighing 41kgs, realising £144.63 (352ppk). Closely followed by Messrs A J & F M Harrison, Grange Hall with a run of 32 to average 349ppk (£142.47).

An overall sale average of £121.63 was achieved, up considerably on the week, this being a reflection of the number of orders around the ringside just for heavy hoggs, with Mr J Bland, Clea Hall topping the sale at £154 ahead, for Texel tup hoggs, bought by Mr Jason Tucker.

Leading in the heavy hoggs averages was Messrs Pearson, Manor Farm with a run of 33 superb Texel X Hoggs, weighing 49kg, to average 275ppk (49kgs).

Several Pens of Mule Hoggs selling well in excess of £120 ahead, and four pens up to £126, with Messrs H M & R Ivinson, Hole House, selling a run of £105 to average £124.80.

Then on to the cast Ewes something you would call an unbelievable trade, with the horned ewes fetching some insane returns.

The sale averaged a staggering £117.95 up £11.47 on the week topping at £274 a new market record for a pen of 6 Texel Ewes from Holme House selling to Mr Jason Tucker.

A total of 46 ewes selling in excess of £200 ahead with Messrs R Pigg & Son, Gaitsgill selling their consignment averaging £214.85.

Some superb pens of Suffolk X Park Cheviots from D Moir, Caithness achieving a top of £176 ahead, with 325 sold to average £139.82. Horned Ewes met some blistering prices with Scotch Blackface ewes, selling to a top of £116 ahead.
Holme House sold a run of 100 to average a staggering £102.93, and selling a pen of 24 to £115, with a total of 359 Blackface sold in total, to average £92.77.
