On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers' Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,036 Prime sheep, comprising of 2,543 prime lambs and 2,493 cast ewes and rams.

Slight rewind in prices in the prime lamb ring but nevertheless all buyers were forward and still keen to purchase. The whole sale still managed to average £125.43, up £36 on the year, topping at £165 a head for a 49kg Texel lamb from Ratten Castle, selling to Mr R Skelton. This consignment of 12 averaged £149.67/343ppk. This was closely followed at £164 (364ppk) for a 45kg Beltex X Texel lamb from Messrs R Noble, Murrah Hall, selling to Mr M Bowe.

A SQQ average of 286ppk was achieved throughout the sale, with a top of 376ppk being achieved by Mr WH Brass, Low Row with a pen of seven 42kg Beltex X Texel lambs totalling £158, selling to Mr R Vivers.

A ring full of 32 English Mules from A.R Nixon, Gretna weighed 46kg’s, none farm assured, achieved £125 (272ppk).

Numbers keep coming forward in the ewe section, with demand holding very well. The whole sale averaged £100.86, topping at £250 a head from Messrs T&J Airey, New Grange Farm, for three Texel ewes selling to Mr J Tucker. This consignment of 28 averaged £201.04.

A total of 46 ewes sold in excess of £200 a head, with another star consignment of 61 Texel X ewes from Messrs Clubbs, Old Wall, Irthington averaging a staggering £176.62.

The heavier end of mules were regularly £120 plus, topping at £128 a head for a pen of 13 from Backmuir Livestock and a pen of five from Messrs J.D Bowness, Cliburn Hall, all selling to Mr A Dawson.

Horned ewes sold exceptionally well with Scotch Blackface topping at £108 a head, with numerous pens at £90 plus. A pen of nine Swaledale ewes from Mr AR Edmondson, Hawkswell achieved £92 a head and the same home sold a pen of 10 to £88 a head.

Cast rams sold very well, with Bluefaced Leicester’s topping at £174 from Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House. Horned rams sold to a top of £118 a head for a Herdwick from AD & T Harrrison, Brotherilkeld.
