Prime Sheep 061021
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,353 prime sheep, comprising of 1,843 prime lambs & 2,510 cast ewes and rams.
Demand lifted once again with spirited bidding across the whole sale, an SQQ average of 254ppk was achieved up again on the week. The sale topped at 329ppk for 38kg Beltex lambs from Messrs Hodgson, Woodfoot, Askham, realising £125 purchased by Vivers Scotlamb, with numerous other pens exceeding 300ppk.
The overall sale averaged £112.33, up £22.18 on the corresponding sale last year, topping at £162 per head for a pen of 61kg Texel lambs (266ppk) from Mr N Holliday, Brow Top, purchased by West Scottish Lamb, with this run averaging £144.37/270ppk.
A ring full of Texel cross Mule lambs, weighing 58kg, from Messrs JJ Henderson & Son, Park House, realised £141, purchased by Mr J Tucker.
Messrs EJ Ivinson & Sons, Skelling Farm, sold a run of Cheviot Mule lambs to average £124.58 for 50kg, topping at £126 for a pen of 52kg.
Messrs Fleming & Wilson, Low Mill, sold a superb run of 40 Mule lambs, hopper-fed, to average £120.50/234ppk, topping at £122 for 52kg.
Messrs TD & M Moore & Son, Softley Farm, sold 39kg Swaledale lambs to £87/223ppk, purchased by Mr A Dawson.
A phenomenal number of cast ewes & rams were forward once again with some eye-watering prices being achieved. Texel ewes topped at £238 from Riverview, purchased by Mr J Tucker. A total of 64 cast ewes and rams sold in excess of £150 per head, with Texel tups topping at £170 for a single from Messrs T & S Fawcett, Bustabeck.
Heavy Mule ewes topped at £115 from Messrs D & R Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill. Swaledales achieved a sharp trade once again with no ease in last weeks prices, a ring full from Messrs Fleming & Wilson, Low Mill, achieved £66, purchased by Mr N Lomax.
