Breeding Ram Sale 150921

On Tuesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Annual Prize Show & Sale of 624 Suffolk, Texel, Beltex, Charollais and Continental Breeding Rams, generously sponsored by Marsh Commercial.

Our second sale of the backend followed suit, demand was exceptionally strong all day with some orders and customers going home short or empty handed. From start to finish prices kept at a strong, level trade with power and strength achieving some phenomenal returns, with some vendors commenting rams had achieved £300 more than other centres.

The sale topped at £1,700 for a pure Beltex shearling, up at the front end with loads of style and class from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, Dumfries, purchased by Mr Boyd, this run of exceptionally well turned out rams averaged £1028.33.

Closely followed at £1,400 was the champion Beltex shearling from Messrs TN & J Hall, Ainstable Hall, with a superb model of a sheep showing tremendous shape and quality, sired by Kindledores Englebert, purchased by our judge Mr T Airey, Dearham.

Suffolk shearlings topped at £900 for the pick of a strong entry from Messrs WR & SD Siddle, Honeypot, purchased by Dale Head Farming Company. This run of excellent skinned sheep with unbelievable shape averaged £660.

Champion honours in the Texel shearling class went to great regular supporter of this sale, Mr G Pyman, Park View, turning out quality rams every year, showing a tup with tremendous bone and power to achieve £1,200, purchased by Mr T Airey, Dearham, again backing his judgement.

A mention must go to the Wales family, Thackwood, Raughton Head, with one of the best consignments of rams they’ve sold here, showing a run of eighteen to average a staggering £809.44, topping at £1080 for a cross-bred Charollais x Beltex, purchased by Messrs Lyle, Staingills.

Ram lambs topped at £700 twice, firstly for the champion Suffolk, a stylish and powerful lamb from S Woodend, Hyton Farm, purchased by Messrs RW & PM Jackson and secondly for a stunning Suffolk lamb with exceptional skin and character from Miss L Hutchinson, Howgill Foot, purchased by Mr G Rylands.
