On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,588 prime sheep, comprising of 788 prime lambs, 427 prime hoggs & 1,373 cast ewes & rams.
More than twice the number of lambs were forward on the week to an increased ringside of customers. A shortage of ¾ bred lambs were presented with these achieving some great returns.
The sale averaged an astounding £140.18, topping at £190 (317ppk) for 60kg Suffolk cross Texel lambs from Mr M Trotter, High Greenrigg Farm, Caldbeck, purchased by Jewitt Meat Company.
Heavy lambs achieved the dearest trade on the day, with Mr JD Johnson, Castle Bank, selling 48kg Texel cross lambs to £187 purchased by Mr R Skelton.
Holme House sold handy-weight Texel cross lambs, weighing 39kg, to £151 (387ppk) purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
Most orders were short of numbers today, with many more lambs needed on a weekly basis to fulfil buyers demand.
A very mixed show of hoggs was forward with meat still being very good to sell, Messrs T Armstrong & Sons, Sceugh Dyke, sold 57kg Continentals to £156, purchased by Mr R Skelton, with this run averaging £130.36.

Another bumper show of cast ewes and rams was forward to an extremely competitive ringside of buyers, with extra orders ensuring all classes were up on the week once again.
The sale topped at £210 for a pair of Texel ewes from Holme House, purchased by Pak Mecca Meat Ltd. A total of 215 ewes and rams sold in excess of £140, with a total of 247 Suffolk ewes averaging £131.57, topping at £160.
First-time customers, Mr TJ Ball, Darlington, sold a run of 94 commercial fat Texel cross Mule & Suffolk ewes to average a staggering £138.34.
Horned and Mule ewes achieved some cracking returns with a ring full of English Mules from Backmuir Livestock realising £122, purchased by Mr D Kemp. Swaledale ewes from Mr D Raine, Old Parks, achieved £106, purchased by Mr N Lomax. Scotch Blackfaced ewes averaged a staggering £94.40, topping at £110.
A pen of 10 Herdwick tup shearlings achieved £112 from Mr A Cleasby, Eamont Bridge, purchased by Mr J Linsley.
Cast rams still achieved some rare returns with Witton Farms realising £175 per head for a pen of Texels, purchased by S & S Meats.
