Prime Sheep 100221

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,520 prime sheep, comprising of 2,106 prime hoggs & 1,414 cast ewes & rams.

Another fantastic trade was witnessed in the prime hogg section, with an SQQ average of 279ppk and 264ppk being achieved overall. The sale topped at 385ppk for a pen of 40kg Texel cross hoggs from Messrs EA & N Thompson, Bromley Green purchased by Mr M Bowe, this run of hoggs averaged £149.56/379ppk.
A pen of Beltex cross hoggs achieved 383ppk from Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck, realising £157 per head, this run averaged £136.70/310ppk.

Blackfold Farm sold a run of forty Continental hoggs to average £137.18/270ppk for 50kg, topping at £167/371ppk for 45kg.

The whole sale averaged £120.23, with heavy hoggs selling to a much sharper trade. Messrs HM & R Ivinson, Hole House sold a pen of twenty 58kg hoggs to £133, purchased by Farmers Fresh. Messrs WH & M Sisson, Fenton Farm sold a run of superb heavy hoggs to average £141.35/248ppk for 59.5kg.

Suffolk Mule hoggs, weighing 62kg from Messrs T Armstrong, Sceugh Dyke achieved £147 purchased by Mr N Lomax.

Messrs W & SE Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall sold a run of forty exceptionally well-bred Texel hoggs to average £143.03/295ppk for 48.5kg.

Swaledale tup hoggs from Dalemain sold to £117 per head for 50kg, purchased by Mr A Dawson.

Scotch Blackfaced hoggs, weighing 43kg, achieved £116 (270ppk) from Mr JC Robinson, Black Leases, this home also sold a ring full of 44kg Cheviot Mules to £119, all purchased by Mr S Jenner.

Lightweight hoggs were in short supply with Messrs J Weir, High Lodore Farm selling 31kg Cheviot hoggs to £87/281ppk purchased by Mr N Lomax, this home also sold a pen of seventeen 33kg Herdwicks to £88/267ppk purchased by Mr W Shearer.

All classes are required for our sale next week with demand very strong.

Another good show of cast ewes and rams was forward to our competitive ringside of buyers, topping at £188 for a pair of Texel ewes from Holme House, purchased by Mr J Tucker.

Most classes were slightly sharper on the week, with more orders in place to ensure a competitive trade.

A total of 205 Suffolk ewes averaged £102.17, topping at £120 from Holme House. A ring full of 45 lean ewes achieved £105, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.

Backmuir Livestock sold Mule ewes to £98 for a ring full purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn.

Horned ewes sold well with first time customer Mr N Edmondson, Sheargreen Barn selling Swaledale ewes to £78 per head and Miss T Miller, Smithy Garth selling Scotch Blackfaced ewes to £87, purchased by Mr J Tucker.
