Rearing Calves & Stirks 220121
On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 90 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
Another good show of both calves and stirks was forward but many more are required to fulfil demand, with over thirty buyers present on a regular basis and trade being the dearest seen in a long time.
The sale topped at £630 for a four-month-old Charolais bull stirk from Messrs Messenger, Howes Farm, purchased by Mr WH Brass, Low Row, closely followed by 4–5 month old Shorthorn bulls from the same home, achieving £600 per head. This run of stirks averaged a staggering £523.50.
Black & Whites were easily sold with demand greater than ever, averaging £135.36 and topping at £265 for twelve-week-old bull calves from Messrs Dent, Kaber Fold, purchased by Mr A Johnson. Fleckvieh calves, four-weeks-old, topped at £235 from Messrs AD & FE Elliott, Askrigg Hall, purchased by Mr D Holgate.
Young Continental and Native calves achieved great returns with eight-week-old British Blues from Messrs Turnbull, Monks House, topping at £430 and averaging £398.75. Aberdeen Angus calves, eight-weeks-old, topped at £300 from Messrs Hurford, Bramery, with this run of mostly heifers averaging £248.75.
