Prime Sheep 200121

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,474 prime sheep, comprising of 1,798 prime hoggs & 1,676 cast ewes & rams.

A much smaller show of hoggs was forward with an unbelievable SQQ average of 264ppk being achieved, despite a considerable shortage of smart hoggs. The whole sale averaged £111.10 per head.

The sale topped at 345ppk for a pen of eight 42kg Beltex hoggs from Messrs RW & PM Jackson, Moss Dyke, realising £145 per head, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.

Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck, sold a run of sixty-five Beltex cross Texel hoggs to average 292ppk/£123 for 42kg.

Messrs Bousfield, Glaslyn House, sold a run of 47kg Texel cross hoggs to average £127.61, topping at £137 for a pen of eleven, weighing 46kg, purchased by Mr M Bowe.

Swaledale hoggs from Mr D Baldry, Howtown Hotel, sold to 231ppk for 42kg, realising £97 purchased by Mr N Lomax. Heavier Swaledales from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, achieved £108 for 48kg, purchased by Mr A Dawson. Herdwick hoggs from Mr JR Weir, Thorneythwaite, achieved £110 per head for 46kg, purchased by Mr A Dawson.

A larger show of cast ewes and rams was forward to our complete ringside of buyers, following the national trend fat and heavy ewes were cheaper on the week but horned and plain ewes sold to a fast trade similar to last week.

The sale topped at £190 for Texel ewes from Holme House, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats. Messrs Graham, Hallrigg, sold a pen of three Texel ewes to £188, purchased by Mr J Tucker.

Mule ewes sold regularly in excess of £90 and plenty of pens of Swaledale ewes achieved over £70 per head, with plain ewes the dearest trade of the day.

Cast rams topped at £170 for a Charollais from Messrs TJ & JM Powley, Blands Farm, purchased by Mr D Kemp on behalf of S & S Meats, Darlington, with proceeds kindly donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.
