Prime Sheep 130121

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,343 prime sheep, comprising of 2,965 prime hoggs & 1,378 cast ewes & rams.

A phenomenal trade was witnessed in the prime hogg ring today, an SQQ average of 273ppk was achieved with a shortage of smart lambs forward.

The sale topped at 355ppk for 40kg Texel cross hoggs from Messrs AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall, realising £142 purchased by Yorkshire Halal, this run of hoggs averaged £121/303ppk for 39kg.

Mr WH Brass, Low Row sold a pair of Beltex hoggs, weighing 43kg to a top of £170 purchased by Yorkshire Halal, with the proceeds kindly being donated to the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

The sale averaged £118.11 overall, with heavy hoggs exceptionally good to sell. Messrs G & JE Bell, Far Broom sold a run of Texel cross Beltex hoggs to average £136.88/263ppk for 52kg, topping at £145 for 62kg, purchased by West Scottish Lamb.

Suffolk hoggs sold to £146 from Messrs T Armstrong & Sons, Sceugh Dyke, purchased by Farmers Fresh, this run of hoggs averaged £128.83/248ppk.

Messrs RW & G Dickinson, High Knipe sold a run of 88 well-farmed Texel cross hoggs to average £132/291ppk for 45kg.

Messrs JC Robinson, Black Leases sold a run of 150 commercial Texel cross Mule and Mule hoggs to average £118.89/271ppk for 43.5kg

Messrs Wilson, Street Head sold a run of Scotch Blackface hoggs to achieve £112 for 43kg (260ppk), purchased by Mr R Skelton.

Messrs DW Cannon & Son, Low Abbey, sold a pen of 45kg Mule hoggs to £116/258ppk purchased by Mr R Skelton.

Lightweight Herdwick hoggs, full of meat, achieved 255ppk for 33kg, realising £84 from Mr S Robinson, Thrang Crag, purchased by Mr A Dawson.

Cast ewes and rams achieved another large lift, topping at £200 per head for a Texel ewe from C Kelly & E Bellas, Croft Ends Farm, purchased by Mr J Tucker.

The whole sale averaged £92.81, with Bluefaced Leicester rams from Messrs M Bindloss & Sons, Shap Abbey, achieving £168, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.

Mule ewes averaged £101.05 per head, topping at £116 for a pen of twelve from Backmuir Livestock. Horned ewes were short of requirements, with a ring full of 27 Scotch Blackfaces achieving £87 per head.

A run of 85 Easy-Care ewes topped at a staggering £80 for a pen of 13, and £79 for a pen of 46.
