Annual "New Fair" & "Troutbeck" Breeding Ewes & Lambs - 07.05.24
On Tuesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Annual “New Fair” Prize Show & Sale of 5,795 Hoggs, Ewes & Shearlings with Lambs at Foot & Geld Gimmer Hoggs together with the “Troutbeck” Sale of Swaledale, Herdwick and Hill Bred Ewes with Lambs at foot kindly sponsored by Peter Horn Mobile Sheep Dipping & PFK Rural.
Our annual noted sale attracted once again one of the finest offerings of Breeding Sheep any where in the country. From start to finish the demand throughout the sale and the trade held extremely strong a reflection of the quality forward.
The sale topped at £200 a life from Mr N Edmondson, Low Wood Farm, Barnard Castle in a popular section if the sale with a pen of Suffolk x Cheviot Mule Hoggs with Texel lambs selling to Messrs A & M J Trafford.
Mule Hoggs and lambs attracted a larger audience of buyers compared to previous years providing a lot of strong bidding with the sale topping at £180 from stalwart supporters to this sale Messrs Winter, Clickham also taking Champion honours selling to D Brennand, Hackthorpe. Regularly Hogg’s with single lambs £140 - £155 and twins achieving a top of £115 a life from Mr W J Messenger, Howes Farm.
Loads of demand throughout the sale for Shearlings with lambs at foot. Mules topping at £142 for singles and £124 for twins on 2 occasions from Messrs T W Fawcett, Little Blencowe Farm with superb Suffolk Lambs.
Older Ewes met spirited bidding with Suffolks topping at £195 with single lambs from Mr M Allan, Knock Hall and Mr J C Horn, Birks Head selling a consignment of Texel x Ewes with Beltex lambs to average £132.30 topping at £182. 3 & 4 shear Mule Ewes topped at £128 from Mr W N Robinson, Eden Hall with twins at £114.
The traditional Troutbeck section topped at £84 a life from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck with a pen of young Swaledale Ewes with Mule lambs at foot. Herdwicks topped at £58 a life with Texel lambs at foot from Mr Toms, Middle Fell Farm, Great Langdale.
All in all, a huge success was witnessed helped by the massive audience of buyers and the quality on offer. All classes are required for our next sale The Second “Troutbeck” and “Latter” Fair sale on Tuesday 21st May, entries close noon Tuesday 14th May.
