Prime Sheep - 24.04.24
Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4779 prime sheep, comprising 2010 prime hoggs & 2,769 cast ewes & rams.
Another strong entry of just over 2000 Hoggs with meaty well finished sheep continuing to sell exceptionally well. However, these runs of sheep were in very short supply with a huge majority being unfinished. A whole sale average of 387ppk achieved.
Top price today of 518ppk for 3 Beltex at 39kg achieving £202 from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck. Closely followed at 516ppk for 10 at 44kg selling for £227 from Messrs W R & F D Siddle, Honeypot. Top price per head of £252 for 2 at 64kg from Messrs A H Ritson, Ireby Hall with this homes run of 27 selling to average £218.59. Messrs B Taylor, Thwaite Hall sold a great run of heavy Suffolk hoggs to average £224. Scotch Blackface hoggs sold to £419ppk for 43kg achieving £180 from Williamson Bros, Greenhills Farm.
Cheviots sold to 424ppk for a pen of 25 at 45kg achieving £191 from Messrs R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck.
Once again as we proceed through the week the trade erupts and were back to a Wednesday bonanza!! With most certainly the dearest trade ever witnessed for the ewes with 2770 sold averaging £158.90.
It’s all just facts and figures with nothing inflated here. 614 Suffolk ewes sold to average £184.78!! with a top of £238 ahead achieved for 8 from Mr A Straney, Glenroyd, with the same home selling 19 Suffolks to £234 and 19 Suffolks to £230, with a total of 147 selling over £200.
A grand total of 388 sold over £200 topping at £295 twice from Holme House firstly with a pen of 7 selling to Romford Halal, Essex and a pair of Texels to A J Meats, Birmingham.
Charollais once again proves to be very popular with 280 sold to average £190.03. Topping at £280 for a pen of 5.
A smaller show of Mule and Horned ewes which left orders uncomplete! Topping at £188 for Scotch Mules from Messrs Sowerby, Sycamore Rise with numerous heavies £170 plus. Scotch Blackface topped at £145 for a pen of 21 from Little Farm.
Cast Rams sold extremely well regularly £200 plus topping at £250 from Mr W J Messanger, Howes Farm selling to Mr D Kemp. With 81 tups sold to average £170.68.
With Qurbani fast approaching this is the ideal time to be gathering up and any geld ewes and making the most of the trade at hand.
