Rearing Calves & Stirks 120424
On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 176 Rearing Calves and Stirks forward.
Trade was far sharper than expected with many locals busy lambing, all classes were dearer than last fortnight.
The sale topped at £880 for a 12-month-old Saler bull stirk from Messrs GL Armstrong & Son, Blunderfield East, this home also sold a pen of 3 Holstein bulls to £805. Messrs JD Bowness, Cliburn Hall, sold a 9-month-old British Blue bull to £850.
The best run of stirks was seen here in Penrith for a long time, with Messrs JD & F Wharton, Town Head Farm, selling a consignment of 7 Limousin bullocks, 7-months-old, to average £704.17. Messrs Messenger, Howes Farm, sold a great run of 10 5-6-month-old British Blue & Charolais stirks to average £685.50.
Some great runs of calves were forward, topping at £540 for a lovely 3-month-old British Blue bull from Brackenburgh Home Farms, with this home also selling others to £530.
Heifers topped at £490 for a pair of 3-month-old British Blue calves from Donaldsons Dairy, Threapthwaite Farm.
Young calves topped at £340 for a 5-week-old British Blue bull from Messrs Tweedie, South Dyke. Dairy sired calves topped at £280 for a Montbeliarde bull from Donaldsons Dairy, Threapthwaite Farm.
