Prime Sheep - 21.02.24
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,508 prime sheep, comprising of 2,847 prime hoggs & 2,661 cast ewes & rams.
Another brilliant entry of 2847 Prime hoggs were forward with trade continuing to excel and rise. A whole sale average of £153.42pph up £46 on the same week as last year which includes 1600 heavy hoggs an overall average of 347sqq (327ppk) was achieved.
Topping today’s sale at 447ppk for a pen of 7 38kg Beltex hoggs achieving £170pph from Messrs Hall, Inglewood Edge with 160 hoggs selling in excess of 400ppk. Top price per head of £212 came for a pen of 7 at 66kg from Grange Walls with Suffolk hoggs selling to £200 for 2 at 84kg from Messrs W R & F D Siddle, Honeypot.
Messrs W & S E Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall, sold a great single hogg at 52kg or £192pph or 369ppk.
Messrs W R & F D Siddle, Honeypot sold 14 heavy hoggs to average £194.29. Messrs Murray, Prior House sold another great run of 42 averaging 48kg at 369ppk or £178pph. Messrs A J & F M Harrison, Grange Hall’s run of 45 brilliant Beltex hoggs to average 414ppk for 38kg at £161.
Mules topped at £153 or 326ppk for a pen of 22 at 47kg selling from Messrs D W Cannon & Son, Low Abbey. Scotch hoggs sold exceptionally well with a pen of 12 at 44kg achieving £147 or 334ppk from Messrs W & S E Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall.
Cast Sheep sold to average £131.09 up £7 on paper. Show stock comfortably £12 - £15 ahead more. A result of 15 active buyers, all competitively bidding for all classes. Numbers are required over the coming weeks to fulfil demands.
Topping at £305 went to Holme House with pure Texel’s selling to Najib & Sons, Derbyshire.
Ewes with weight sold to some rare returns with Suffolks averaging £149.26 with all the heavies £170 - £195. With pures topping at £290 from Glenroyd Road and closely followed at £240 from Mr C Abernethy.
Mule Ewes hit the big price’s with Backmuir Livestock, selling 11 releasing £137, 32 to £134 and 65 to £122 with all in all averaging £117.56.
Horned ewes comfortably fell a long way short of buyer’s requirements with Messrs N & A Robertson, North Blackbogs selling a ring full of wethers to £136 but plenty of Swale and Scotch Ewes £90 plus.
Strong Rams comfortably £200 plus topping at £230 selling from Tarn End.
