On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,337 prime sheep, comprising of 2,676 prime hoggs & 2,661 cast ewes & rams.
With demand continuing to rise and trade dear again. A whole sale average of £148pph/ 324ppk or 338sqq. Top price on the day was 454ppk, for a single Beltex hogg from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands weighing 37kg realising £168.
Top price per head of £208 for 67kg Continental hoggs, from Mr Jack Bland, Clea Hall.
7 hoggs in the whole sale sold in excess of £200.
A run of 42 expertly finished lambs from Messrs Murray, Prior House sold to average £187pph for 57kg closely followed with an average of £186 for 27 Continental hoggs from Messrs Nevinson, High House, weighing 56kg.
Suffolks topped at £186 for 66kg from Messrs Armstrong, Sceugh Dyke.
Mule lambs continue to be very popular topping at £156 for 54kg from Messrs Ivinson, Hole House this home sold 99 to average 51kg or £151.82 per head.
Messrs Ridley, Brewery House Barn sold a pen of 17 Scotch Blackface, weighing 47kg realising £150. Messrs Coulthard, Brisco Hill sold 51 Scotch Blackface Hoggs to average 322ppk.
Cast Ewes witnessed a large well needed rise, with Penrith knocking the spots of all our competitors once again with a sale average of £123.44 up £15.10 on the week.
The sale topped at £300 ahead from Tarn End Farm selling to PAK Mecca Meats.
449 Suffolk Ewes averaged £137.15 topping at £205 for pure Suffolk Ewe with plenty of Ewes with weight, £155 - £165.
Mule Ewes took a huge lift with all in averaging £111.39 topping at £137 with most pens £8 ahead sharper on the week.
Horned Ewes witnessed a blast of a trade with first time customers R Wallace & Co, Mains of Collin, Castle Douglas averaging £101.77 for 132 Scotch Blackface, topping at £112 for a pen of 19 and a pen of 51 achieving £107. All blackies sold, averaged £93.98.
Other first time vendors Messrs R & L Lamb, Peterhead, Aberdeen achieved £215 for a pen of 3 cross bred Rams selling to Pickstock Foods
