Prime Sheep - 31.01.24

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6006 prime sheep, comprising of 2915 prime hoggs & 3091 cast ewes & rams.

A great entry of 2915 Prime Hoggs forward witnessing a blistering trade throughout with a whole sale average of 305ppk or 322sqq and £138.50pph.

Topping the sale at 446ppk for a pen of 9 lovely Beltex hoggs weighing 37kg achieving £165 from Messrs Bindloss, Shap Abbey. Top price per head of £188 for 1 at 74kg from Messrs Nevinson, High House. With this home run averaging £172. Messrs Barclay, Herestone sold 5 fabulous Texel Hoggs to £180 for 70kg. Suffolk lambs sold to £174 for a pen of 12 at 60kg. Ballynahinch sold 51 hoggs to average 54kgs at £166.

Cheviot Mules sold to £150 for a pen of 16 54kg. Mules sold to 311ppk for a pen of 11 at 44kg achieving £137 from Messrs Ellwood, Howrigg. A lovely run of 25 lambs from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands averaged 41kg at 405ppk or £167.

A bumper show of Cast Ewes and Rams were forward averaging a healthy £107.09. All classes saw a sharper trade as a result of 14 active Cast Ewe buyers ensuring all classes were kept to the true value. The sale topped at £250 for a Texel Ewe from Mr S Barclay, Herestone, Aberdeen purchased by PAK Mecca Meats LTD.

Backmuir livestock sold pure Suffolks to £172 with numerous pens £140 - £155. Mule Ewes sold to a much sharper trade throughout the sale with all sold averaging £97.56 topping at £140 from Mr R Jenkinson, Cliburn purchased by Mr A Dawson. Backmuir Livestock achieved £118 for a pen of 48 purchased by Mr D Kemp.

Horned Ewes with flesh regularly £70 - £80 topping at £97 for Scottish Blackface and a pen of 20 from Mr A M Macdonald achieving £86. Cheviot Ewes sold exceptionally well throughout the4 sale with number of North Country Cheviots £100 - £110 topping at £124.

Rams with flesh and weight £150 plus topping at £195 for Holmehouse.

Demand is extremely buoyant and travelled sheep today reaped the rewards.
