Prime Sheep Report 170124

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4714 prime sheep, comprising of 1673 prime hoggs & 3,041 cast ewes & rams.

A smaller offering of Prime Hoggs was forward at our weekly sale with demand still exceptionally strong with a whole sale average of 295ppk or £129 pph.

Topping today’s sale at 410 ppk for a cracking single lamb weighing 41kg or £168 pph from Mr T Magnay, Galleywreay Farm.

Top price per head of £185 for a single Suffolk lamb weighing 82kg from Backmuir Livestock.

Meaty lambs continue to be exceptionally sought after. Mr J Winter Clickham sold 16 lovely Texel lambs, to average £162 for 40kg. Messrs Holliday & Graham sold 17 Beltex lambs to average 46kg /350ppk or £161. Suffolks topped at 292ppk for 48kg realising £140 from Mr R A Crichton, Rottington Hall. Mules sold to 280ppk for a pen of 28 mules at 46kg/£129 from Messrs Maughan, Street House. A pen of 54 Blackfaced tup hoggs weighing 39kg, realising £109 from Cocklaw Farm. More Sheep can easily be sold to vendors’ advantage.

2024 brings in 15 active buyers with competition as great as ever. A great busy ring throughout the day with competition strong and demand sharper again. The leading average was achieved with all sold, averaging £114.69. The sale topped at £300 a head for Texel ewes from Holme House, selling to Mr James Linsley,

Messrs T & J Airey, New Grange Farm sold a run of 30 Texel ewes to average £234.17 topping at £290 for a pen of 4 selling to Pak Mecca Meats, Birmingham.

A total of 101 Ewes sold in excess of £200 a head with Texel Tups also achieving £200 from Mr D Moir, Aberdeen selling to Yorkshire Halal.

A Pen of 4 Goats from Sockbridge Hall, Penrith realising £135 purchased by Romford Halal.

Mules with weight sold well with Backmuir Livestock selling a pen of 41 realising £124 a head and 11 achieving £118 and 16 to £111 with all Mules achieving £96.89

Horned Ewes fell a long way short of requirements and a lot more could have been sold with great ease.

Suffolk Ewes sold at £200 a head with several pens of heavy ewes £150-£160 a head and 450 Suffolk ewes sold averaging £130.44
